PLEASE READ...........SMELL OF PETROL IN OIL

Featured Replies

Whilst checking the oil in the Wife's Fabia MkII Vrs (60 plate, 4320 miles) I noticed that the engine oil was very thin, bit like water, and there seemed to be too much oil in, way over the top mark on the dip stick. Car not turned a wheel or been started for 2 days

I smelt the Dip stick and there was a strong smell of petrol in the oil. ( even the wife could smell it)

Car recovered by Skoda Assist and is now at the dealers for further Investigation.

Car serviced about 6 weeks ago by the dealer and I have added no oil since then.

May just be the smell of that oil?

Oil doesnt smell of petrol Kie .....LOL

Sorry to read this Andy

Actually you are both right. New oil does not smell of fuel, but used oil from a gasoline engine will. However, Auric (or rather Mrs Auric) may have a problem although the oil in these cars is very light (watery) and i had to double check when i started pouring oil into mine that i had actually picked up the right product as i was expecting something a little heavier.

There is one thing though and that is when should the oil be checked? there have been many discussions on here about this concerning the vRS and that it should be done once the engine/oil are warm, that is they are held up in the oil system around the engine. I am not an expert here as to what the oil level should be from cold and when warm but the handbook does go against all my previous experience.

Auric, if you did this from cold, this may explain the high oil level, but if you ave checked like this previously and the result is now different, you are right to get this looked at.

Seen a Fabia VRS in the dealer recently with this fault, unfortunately the engine was totalled. High pressure fuel pump was leaking fuel into the head and diluting the oil.

Have seen this previously with heavy duty diesel engines, and the RB-199 installed in Tornado aircraft can also 'make oil'.

Update:--

Just got the car back and everything is as it should be. Nothing to worry about. Oil level will be high when cold as it must be checked when the car has been running so it must be on the mark when the engine is hot, Dealers words not mine.

As for the smell of petrol, well theres none in the oil as we've checked it. I'm not convinced really I still think I can smell petrol but they say its fine.

I've made a note of times and dates so if it goes pear shaped at least I've had it checked

So it was just the smell of the oil then :p

I smelt the Dip stick and there was a strong smell of petrol in the oil

Same on my Fabia 1.2 HTP, Roomster 1.4 MPI and Fabia 1.2 TSI :rain:

Some oils do specialy fully synth when warm, but the petrol would seperate from the oil and youde get a rainbow colouring on the oil

Well after reading through this thread I checked my oil. I found it a bit down of the middle of the dipstick's area B. It is 10.700Km and 11 months since my last service. So I topped up 250 ml of oil and the level came a bit above the middle of the area B. When serviced oil level was at the top of area A. I calculate that my engine consumed about 700 - 800 ml but I must admit that the car is used 90% in the city in low speed, small distances, steep hills up and down and many starts and stops daily (about 10Km total). So I don't think this is a real problem. What is your opinion ?

As about the petrol smell. Mine smells petrol too (5w-30). I checked a friend's Audi a3 '07 1.6 Mpi (10w-40) and his smells too. I double checked another friend's Golf '04 1.6 Fsi (5w-30) and his oil smells too. So I conclude that smell is a normal state. Yet no sign of petrol mixed in the oil, there was only oil.

My car now has 25.174Km on clock and will be serviced next month. Board computer indicates 3.800Km or 32 days left to service. No warning lights till now.
