N revision PCV fitted along with BKR8EIX plugs

Featured Replies

I have fitted them both today along with an oil change. The car pulls so much better and there are no flat spots at all throughout the rev range. Plus the pops and burbles on overrun sound even better than before

N revision PCV! please enlighten the unenlightened!!

Its the latest revision PCV valve for the early engines that dont have a check valve fitted in the rear breather hose. Its much more robust and cars running stage 2+ have had no issue with them failing like the earlier revisions. If your car is 07 and newer then you have to fit the P revision PCV valve but be guided by the dealer as to which one is needed. If you fit the P revision then its most likely that you will have to fit the updated rear breather hose too.

Hi 56,

Was fitting the replacement PCV valve as straight forward as this guide suggests: http://vagdrivers.ne...showtopic=40537 ?

and did you also replace the gasket as well?

[Edit:] did you replace the hoses too, or just use the originals and just replace the valve itself?

I'm sure mine needs doing, my idle is all over the place, car feels down on power and my mpg is not good.

My car's going in for a service on wednesday so I asked the dealer to quote me for replacing my PCV* valve, expecting it to be the price of the part + a token amount for fitting, but they've hilariously quoted me over £150 to supply and fit!

Which given that the part only costs £35 and fitting takes 20min seems absolutely ridiculous, especially as they have to remove the engine cover to replace the air filter as part of my service anyway.

I'll be calling them tomorrow to get a breakdown of that quote (as it was left on my answer phone) but on the face of it it looks like they've trying to charge me 2 hrs labour! Jesus.

I'll obviously be fitting it myself instead.

*they also had absolutely no idea what I was talking about, turns out they call it a pressure regulator valve.

More like 1 hour labour charge, given the ridiculous ammounts they ask for these days at dealers.

You just need to buy the valve unless there is any obvious problem with the gasket. The same with the hoses, only renew if they are damaged. £150 for supplying and fiting sounds a lot for a 20 minute job.

Just rememeber dont tighten the screws too tight as it will strip the thread in the head. Just do them loosely till they wont go anymore. Then give it a quick nip to tighten using finger tip pressure on the screwdriver. . Also tighten the 4 screws starting from the very right one then to the left. It just helps the valve settle on the gasket correctly.

If you need any help then please feel free to ask or PM me

That's great, thanks v.much for the offer.

Spoke to them this morning and apparently the quote was simply based on what their computer system told them, completely irrespective of what other work might affect the time taken to change it, which seems bonkers, I could almost see the service guy shrugging his shoulders and holding his hands up over the phone, but they weren't willing to change the quote, so will pick up the parts and sort it myself.

If the gasket's only a couple of quid I might change it also anyway.

Cheers.

From memory the gasket is about £7 or around that figure.

By the way, did you notice any significant engine judder before you sorted yours?

Just been out for a long drive and towards the end of the journey it was really struggling. The car was *really* struggling in higher gears at low revs, worrying amount of judder and very little acceleration. The engine management light flashed on very briefly too.

Bloody hell, hope replacing the PCV sorts it! :S

I didnt notice any engine judder but I changed mine purely for reliability, as the latest ones are stronger units and my car is running a stage 2+ map. If your PCV is broken it will be allowing boost passed the valve and will cause power loss. The engine should idle rough as well. You should have noticed a reduction in mpgs as well if the PCV is the issue.

Ok fingers crossed, thanks a lot for the info.

Well I've just spectacularly failed to even get the f*cking engine cover off!

What a moronic design! Bah.

From this pic:

After you'd unclipped the two metal clips at the back left did you remove the pipework from the engine cover? I had a go at pulling it out but it didn't want to budge.

Was expecting it to be much easier given that the air filter was (allegedly) changed last week!

Seein as its an Irish VAG site link..... :)

Doesn't it say to undo the 2 T20 and separate from the box, then wouldnt the whole lot come up?

*cough*

The back left, not the front right.

Easy mistake to make. ;)

Third time's a charm. Enlisted the help of my handy Dad, two of us pulling it up and it FINALLY popped off! In one piece too!

Once it was off swapping the valve out was a piece of cake, still can't believe the dealer wanted so much for the job, absolutely ludicrous! Will see how car is over the next week or so, hopefully the lumpiness will be sorted.

Lubed the rubber lugs up nicely which made putting it back on (and then pulling it off again to check) much much easier!

On a long run today stopped at traffic lights. Handbrake on and car in neutral I noticed the revs rising and dropping then the car would hunt. Is this the same issue to do with the PCV? It didn't through the EML on. The car was also hot at the time. Thanks James
