ocatvia vrs 07 plate head gasket failure? (petrol)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced a head gasket failure on the 07 petrol vrs octavia? Ive had my car a year, drives great. Yesterday i did my engine checks before a 400 mile drive to scotland, and noticed the car had burnt some oil (it was reading around half way on the dipstick) so i went to top it up, and to my horror the when i took the oil filler cap off it was full think mayo. The coolant appears fine, not losing any and no oil in it.

It has been used for some short journeys in the cold over the last few months? Could this be the reason? Alarm bells are ringing for me that the head gasket is on the way out.

Don't worry its normal for there to be mayo under cap. I believe it's down to condensation.

Yes, unless you can see oil in the coolant or vice-versa or you're loosing coolant it's probably just condensation. Mine tends to grow a sizeable glob of snot under the oil filler cap every couple of weeks when temperatures drop below 5°C or so. Just whipe it off and keep an eye out for grey oil and/or brown coolant.

Cold + short jouneys = brown gunk under filler cap.

Mine has done it since new.

A good thrash to force out the water does the trick apparently.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll keep an eye out but sounds like it's normal then.

Cheers

Nothing to worry about. Same on mine, even had it pressure tested at the dealers. It only stays away if you have long journeys during cold weather. As the others say, wipe it off every week, it looks creamy and brown. Once the warm weather kicks in it'll disappear regardless of journey length.

Yep, same on mine too. As said, nothing to worry about.

U see this on most petrol vag engines, bag made better diesel cars than petrol.

Unless you see it on your dipstick then no need to worry.

?? Yes obviously ??

Is the cause for this condensation , the extra couple of inches that the oil filler cap is on to clear standard engine cover/air filter ? I have removed my standard air filter/engine for an induction kit , and am thinking of removing that plastic tube that the filler cap is on!

It's threads like this that make me love this site. I now know that my TFSi engine uses oil (they nearly all do) and the mayonnaise in the filler cap is usual (and not a knackered head gasket as I had feared!).

Thanks Briskoda. Great site.

My vRS is thirsty too I think maybe the PCV is faulty as I noticed some sludge in the oil when I serviced it last week.

Talk about timing- I was about to post the same question. My 56 plate is using a fair bit of oil and there was mayo around (but not in) my filler cap today.

Phew! :)
