As per the above link, for photos. Basically want to know any info about this lens I might have missed, and more to the point, what it is really worth now. I gather it was on a 1000D Canon EOS but will not work with the modern ones from the last 3 years or so.

Does anyone recognise the lens and might be able to give some decent stats for it / compatability etc? :) Thanks.

Linked in a couple of pics to in here

The lens is around 20 years old now and was designed to work with the older Canon film bodies. There are very few digital bodies if any that are compatible with it and unfortunately Sigma can/will no longer rechip it. Back in its day it may well have been a reasonable quality lens but due to the fact of its limited use now on film bodies only makes its value quite limited im affraid.

That fact that the ebay ad states that it was used on a 1000D from the 2003/4 era is strange as that camera was only released in 2008. If it worked at all with the lens I would say it would only work in manual focus and with limited apeture control.

Hope this helps

I'm going to have to clarify exactly what it was used with then. :( I did think it was quite dated and the owner mentioned the 1000D and the 50D but I know nothing of either camera. :(

Well if hes stating that it has definately been used on both of those cameras then there is a chance that the lens may have already been chipped to work with digital before Sigma stopped doing it.

If its close enough to you then pop along with your camera and test it out. If theres too much distance tell him your findings regarding it not being designed for digital use and ask him if he knows whether its been chipped.

What camera do you have? Is it a lens of this range that you are specifically looking for?

Why bother with anything other than the Canon 18-55mm IS lens ?

Cheap and sharp enough for most photographic needs also get an EF 50mm f/1.8 too, razor sharp and ideal for low light

Because there are better lenses, such as 28-105, 28-135 IS for starters, both of which are excellent walkaround lenses, then there's the Sigma 17-70 DC f2.8-4 HSM OS.

my advice , avoid sigma like the plague

my advice , avoid sigma like the plague

I wouldnt neccessariliy agree with that statement personally. I have had, used and seen some cracking quality Sigma lenses over the year.

However, the problem does seem to be quality control with Sigma and I have read reviews of people with identical lenses suffering totally different issues or to one person to have an issue and another one not. My advise would be shop around. There are plenty of good quality lenes for not alot of cash.

Well I've had no problems with Sigma lenses, mind you all of mine have been imported. :giggle:

Must admit ive always used canon lenses, and i just purches the 70-200 2.8 L series. bit bulky but the quality of the images is second to none, sharp in the centre and the edges and its fast. love it. my first lense was the canon 55-250mm a few years back its a great lens for newbies and its canon made so no issues with quality although it does have a plastic mount. can pick them up for 120 bucks or so.
