1.59 well spent!

Price for a liter of the black gold over here (in EUR)... ah well, sod it! Life is too short worrying about it...who's with me? After all, I probably spend more pampering the thing anyway... :)

Talking of which, just got back from USA where their cr*p 87 octane "gas" (Regular Unleaded) is working out about 60p per litre (or liter). Though quite a variation between districts.

Had interesting rental car - unexpectedly - got given a VW Jetta 2.5SE. I thought I was sitting in my Octy, but on the wrong side! Had a sports mode on the automatic selector but still felt like a noisy lorry compared to my 1.8TSi.

87 octane - I thought our 91 octane regular was bad enough at 87-95p (yes, i know that should be a pound but I can't work out how to type it!). Diesel I pick up at around 98p, and premium unleaded (usually 98 octane) is around the same price

I hate to get technical but I just did some research on this and found there are two ways of measuring the octane of fuel.

The RON method and the MON method. In the UK octane is quoted by the RON number, (91 being regular unleaded). Using the MON method the same fuel will have a MON octane number about 8 - 10 lower than RON.

In the US and Canada the octane number quoted is an average of the RON and MON number called AKI (or sometimes PON), so their regular 87 octane is actually 91 octane RON......in other words, the same as ours!

Where are you? UK regular unleaded is 95

The USA had I think two other higher grades in some places but usually their "other" grade was "Premium", and called 93 octane I think.

They also had fuels with so much per cent bio alcohol of some kind. Well, for a 2 week rental car I just stuck in what they told me, which was regular unleaded, 87. I have no idea what the engine would be like on anything else - probably the engine was a different spec anyway to a European VW 2.5.

Much of our trip was cruising at 60-65 mph on miles of unobstructed interstate, on cruise control - it felt fine like that. Around town it was like driving a cross between a tractor and a pedal car.

I'm in the UK.

Sorry, I should also have explained......

In the UK regular unleaded (91 RON) is not commonly available. As you point out, 95 RON unleaded is commonly sold as "regular" unleaded. Strictly speaking 95 RON is premium unleaded and Super unleaded is 97-98 RON.......Equivilent to the 93 octane stuff in the U.S.
