Anyone use Autocad??

Featured Replies

Just got it and after a bit of advice really...

Not needing to use it too much for structual, but need it to plot and amend electrical items.

Trouble is under the electrical segment there's little there, I need sockets, switches, spurs, dist boards etc...

Anyhelp would be great

What sort of files does it use for the symbols? I have a selection of files from Visio with connectors etc Could you import them as custom shapes?

I'll send you them tomorrow if I get chance/remember. Just PM me your email address.

If you save the .vsd file as a .dwg then it definately works

Here's a dimmer switch :)

So it is! I'll give it a try :)

Wardy - I am using AutoCad 2006

Blimey, a keen newbie :)

It's not been out long. Should get hold of a copy really, see if there's anything majorly new, as my work won't roll it out for a while. I doubt there's anything ground-breaking; I was hearing that it's basically a Service Pack release to 2005 :)

Good luck with it though...

I don't bother too much about that, a copy will appear at work before too long, as we have a maintenance agreement with an ACAD reseller, so get the latest releases.

I'm afraid I don't know much about electrical stuff, I just have to support the installation and licensing of the program, not actually use it :) And our guys use it for road layout and signage mainly anyway. Have you checked the Autodesk support forums? There's a wealth of info on there.

My dad uses Autocad (has done for years).

He says you need to look for the symbol library and should be able to import it from there.

Symbols are usually referred to as blocks.

Look for the Insert menu and blocks or on the toolbars.

Type blocks into help and you should find something useful.

BTW - He's jealous - only just got 2005 version.

All this talk of AutoCAD takes me back a few years. Haven't used it since the late 90's though. Of course it goes without saying that all the pro's started on the boards. Ahh the memories

I started on AutoCAD 12 - in DOS !

Now moved on a little to SolidWorks :D
