Number plate LEDs

Featured Replies

I know on my MK2 Octy they are 36mm and don't need to be can bus friendly as no light comes on the dash after fitment.

I think the Fabia is probally the same. The ones on eBay list for Golf,Polo,Fabia,Octavia etc.

Having searched about a bit I can't find a definitive answer do plate lights need to be Can Bus friendly?

Saw a few posts which mention these

http://www.autobulbs...38mm-white.html

And these

And for a VRS they are 38mm 272?

Any recommendations?

On my Octy II 2004+, they need to be CANBUS ready. I tried the non-CANBUS ones and I got the Error "Number Plate Lights Defective" or some words to that effect along with the Dashboard Light Malfunction Indicator.

These are 36mm in my Car and most probably should be the same in yours, though, 39mm can be easily accommodated.

For the LED's, I have tried a lot of them, each one failing not very soon. I have tried the 2-SMD, 3-SMD, with Heatsink and without, but eventually they would either fail or I would later remove them myself as they would have changed their colour to a blue tinge by now. This blue tinge is because the heat generated by the Load Resistors (CANBUS) are mounted right behind or next to the LED's, because of which, these LED's would get very hot and lose the Phosphour on them which creates the WHITE Light and then the LED's eventually die in that heat.

So what I did was created a custom made LED Panel taken from a 68-SMD T10 and separated the Load Resistors from them by mounting them away from the LED Panel. Now I get a pure WHITE light on my Number Plate which is really bright and spread out.

So, what you basically need is the following but without the CANBUS, which has created the whitest light and was the brightest in my experience. If you are going in for the non-CANBUS ones, make sure you take care of an external Resistor (good idea to distribute the Power/Heat by using more than one) yourself by connecting them externally, i.e, if your Car is particular about the CANBUS.

I've got them on my 05 fabia vrs they were £10 from halfords. No lights come up on the dashand they have been in there for a year. Looks great when the car is clean.

All Fabias and PreFL Octy,s don't get error with these LED,s fitted so you must have a FL Octy as these always give an error.

Im interested in going LED here too. I HATE yellow light! lol. Are these very easy to swap over?

Thanks,

Carl
