I've changed my mind about the Fabia vRS brakes

Featured Replies

A lot of people on here say these are crap, I've never thought they were brillaint, but never as bad as people say...

I have followed tips that ScoobyChris said about running in the brakes, and have been using them even more angrily of late...

And now I think they are pretty good, the pedal feel is much improved, and I've not experienced any fading.

I'm too drunk to talk in depth about it, but it seems to be that if you follow the advice Chris posted from a Lotus forum, and use the brakes hard once in a while, they are much better than I have known them.

Not like you to be complementary, you must be exceedingly drunk, drink more. :D

Yes, I think I'll have a whisky now as well, to help me sleep like :)

 - I get to test the brakes 'hard' pretty regularly, and only now (2k on the clock) it is getting better :)

Mines got 19K on, they feel better than ever.

What I do is emergency stops sometimes like in ScoobyChris's link, and then when I park up, occaisionally keep my foot hard on the brake pedal for a couple of minutes. Also, keep engaging and releasing brake rapidly when driving hard, and now I find the brakes are very good indeed, I can drive at silly speeds if I wanted to and the brakes seem to always inspire confidence, not that I do, of course.

Keep a look out for suregrip :D

Increases grip and thus braking performance which in turn makes the braking system heat up more and "clean" as you have essentially done. Sadly it's also near junctions or dodgy bends...

Sorry mate, thats flew right over my drunken head :D

They'll always be better than standard "other" Fabia brakes. :)

That is at least with standard "other" Fabia pads on. ;)

I think once the pads I've got are wearing out, I'll get some DS2500's. I think the braking performance would be very good then, without the expense of the full conversion.

Thats perked me up a bit. I've done 850 miles and they seem no more than "adequate". They stop the car ok, just not very positively if you get my drift... :o

Mine stop me very positively now. They practically put me through the windscreen with enough force. They do get so much better with age.

Like a fine wine, and women! :D

Part of the problem with braking is the tyres. They play a big part. If you have hard tyres (like the std ones) the feel won't be there. Which I think is waht ColinD was trying to say.

I'm waiting to get a few more miles on the clock & then decide whether to change tyres or pads or both.

I was saying this the other day.

I've got Pirelli P Zero Neros on the Furby now and the braking feels great.

I think some people are just ballet dancing queers who aren't prepared to give the pedal a good stomping on like the good old days before servo assisted brakes.

I've got about 19k on the clock and the braking in this furby is wonderfull

had a close incident with stopping from 120mph to Zero

slammed the brakes on and I was like F**K me that was quick was expecting an extra few seconds down the road

Badgers and the rest of the wildlife can feel safe now

also found it was just as good when you suddenly come across a horse after a sharp right bend

braking on corners sent my old sierra into a bush but this little furby surprised me again with stopping round a bend

big  to skoda you've saved lives

No road kill yet in this furby

the sierra had 2 badgers couple of rabbits and a few smaller animals :o

I cant unfortunately claim no roadkill. I was saying the other day about stones being attracted to the bonnet and windscreen. Well it was a pheasant that was attracted to my windscreen about a week ago, which I hit at 60 mph! Surprisingly, the windscreen survived. Dunno about the pheasant though

I have always had some suspicions over the braking in the car whilst being driven hard. Was racing a Polo GTi from St Andrews to Kirkcaldy the other day and decided to really pay attention to what was happening. Polo was no real match so it gave me a chance to 'over break' into some corners to really work them hard. I found as they warm up they drop in sharpness and become slightly more spongy. Then as they get really hot they lose all progressiveness and its either all or nothing. Your foot is telling you its pressing against something hard and you interprate this to be the floor although I doubt it is. However this bottoms out and there was always enough there and at no time did the car feel as though it would not stop. I think the disconcerting thing is the transition rather than the lack of performance. I think when you are tottling about town they are actually more than you need, you get accustomed to this and become more sensitive to performance. I have thought about changing the discs to Octy ones and have decided against. I think replacement with some really good brake fluid and different pads (will need to search some fo the reviews to see what everybody else thinks is good) will be more than enough

That was what I was trying to get to will the ballet dancing tart post.

You get lulled into tip toeing on them around town but have to remember to stamp on them like a sex offenders head when driving hard.

I used to get that lack of brake feel when driving hard, but as said you gotta be prepared to stamp on them quite hard.

Apart from the technique on the Lotus site, I find if you let the brakes bite, then let go, then bite, let go, keep doing that when you are braking, it should help keep the heat down too.
