Second Speed in MPH?

Featured Replies

Having just made the first long run in my brand new Octavia I checked the accuracy of the speedometer using a GPS. Unsurprisingly the speedo reads about 5% fast however I noticed that the 'Second Speed' in the bottom right of the information display reads correctly, at 30 and 60 mph, although it is in km/h (50 and 100 km/h).

Is there a way in VCDS to change the units of the second speed to mph?

Alternatively when I cycle through the display readouts using the wiper buttons the current speed reads three dashes all the time although the units are stated as mph both at the end of the dashes and in a white circle at the top of the display. I have read the sticky that suggests changing the country to Australia and then using Maxidot to enable this. Will this work for a non Maxidot system and is there a walk through for VCDS as I am still learning how to use it? As the car is so young I am loath to start changing too many things in case something goes wrong

Thanks

Richard

it can be done, you need to code the instrument cluster as country "Australia", this removes the second speed display and replaces it with the external temperature. A consequence is that all the other readings are set to KMs, but tweak the units settings in maxidot to get these back to miles. You can then enable a large MPH speedo, and should you need the kmh display for EU land then you can enable "alt. speed dis" to turn it back on again.

Thanks for the swift rely Manny but I do not have Maxidot on my Octavia.

Do you know how this can be achieved using VCDS on it's own?

Also would the dealer get upset if its ever goes in for warranty work with 'Australia' as the instrument country?

Richard

No, the speedo readout is shown on maxidot so if you don't have maxidot enabling it wouldn't show you anything

Don't forget technically, 50kmh = 31mph and 100km/h = 62mph. :) Not sure if it greatly affects what you're getting at though.

Yes, I now realise that I had rounded the figures. So this means that the speedo and the second speed are the same.

I have looked at changing the Distance Impulse Number by 5% from 1 to 5 but cannot find reliable information as to whether this changes the odometer as well.

Some people say the the odometer reads correctly out the factory even though the spreedo reads intentionally high.

Checking the odometer is a lot harder than checking the speedo.

No, you need maxidot as well.

I Haven't got Australia on my2012 maxidot

You can't access it through the maxidot. You need VCDS to make the coding changes.

Cheers

spreedo reads intentionally high.

That is true. You can check the true speed on you climate display using service mode. It is usually the same as on GPS device, but the speedo shows higher value. Though this can be adjusted (depends on the model).
