vRS MKII, Rattling Engine, Video Added

Ok just tried that heard some funny noises like clicks but then they sort of echoed. Turned off and started the engine, it's just the same still z but lumpy on idle and rattly. Did I do it right? Key in turn to light up dash symbols count 45 seconds turn off and start car

I can't imagine it being the throttle body really. The engine noise is quite loud but then mine is quite loud when the oil is fresh. I traced the noise on mine back to the high pressure fuel pump, which is more than likely the cam follower rattling with the new oil (5w 30 oil is sooooo thin).

You may have a slightly broken PCV for the idling issue. Wait to see what the dealer says.

Agreed, definately check the PCV valve - my 56 and my 06 Vrs (petrol) were broken (very common). Net result is crank vapours are pulled into the intake which will contain oil and depositing on the plugs. Also, it will run weak and the ecu will be all over the place. Dead easy and cheap to replace see link - dont bother with the pipes or gasket unless ther're obviously blocked/broken.

In my experience, the stock PCV, fuel cam follower and diverter valve are useless and get replaced as a matter of course.

Hi a little update.

Took it into Skoda here in inverness to have a technician have a look at it, they sent me along the road to arnold clark where there service department is currently located.

So young boy bout my age takes a look and another older guy comes over too, plugs it in to look for any faults, nothing.

Older guys agrees it sounds a bit rough and rattly.

I queried him about the research I had done and asked about PCV valve and cam follower and he said the PCV didnt show and faults and cant say about the other thing until he takes the altenator belt off!

Its booked back in on Friday for them to have it for the day, although they said they only need it for an hour, they also said the work they did in the half hour they had it today is chargeable, I said that it has a 12 month Skoda dealer warranty and he shut up.

hmmm altenator belt off to look at the fuel cam follower.... interesting.

Skoda at its best still.

OK worded it wrong, I meant he cant judge anything until he takes the belt off and runs it without something or other to rule it out, I forget what he said after that.

Not take the belt off to check cam follower, whatever that is?

I know im not very engine savvy, sorry guys

OK its been in the Skoda garage for a day and they told me there is definitly a knock coming from the top of the engine. They had the top of the engine off apparently to find it

They have sent the diagnoses results to Skoda England to come up with a solution and will let me know on Monday the 2nd April wether or not they will go ahead and fix it, however.

They also said they are hesitant to carry out the work incase the fault still exists after they try to fix it, leaving them with a big bill.

I asked them who can diagnose it accurately so as to avoid a big bill and they said they cant tell until its stripped down.

I also spoke to the Skoda garage I bought it from and he told me he wont authorise any other Skoda garage to repair it, he wants it back so he can do the work himself. (he said why pay someone else when I can do the work myself!)

Thats OK but he is going to have to travel 170 miles and pick the car up on a trailer and give me a courtesy car for the intrim period.

So I have bought a lemon!

Full Skoda service history by the same garage garage I bought it from and a 12 month Skoda Used warranty but still I find myself in this situation. I have done nothing wrong to deserve this.

I also have noticed a clicking and whoosing/ gargling noise whenever the interior climate fan is on, doesnt matter if auto or econ is on or not. And it smells like the engine bay coming through the vents.

Ouch. I think at this point I'd seriously be looking at some very very good will from the garage you bought it from or getting your cash back.

I'm sorry but the 12 month Skoda warranty covers you at any Skoda garage dont let that fob you off, if you have bought it within 6 months just reject it under the sales of goods act.

  • 5 months later...

Sorry for replying to an old post.

Did you have any feedback with the tapping @abarth_1200 ?

Mine has a similar noise too, and only under warranty for another 2 months. Been to 2 Skoda dealerships and both say the same thing "Yeah the VRS does that". But it didnt when I first bought it from them !?

Just listened to the video clip and went out to listen to mine. My car has that metallic tappety sound and mine is running fine. Have you had any update?

Hi, i no longer have this car, i got my money back.

However it was going to need a proper engine strip down to find where the noise was coming from but the Skoda garage who looked at it up here said the cam followers were worn, which i believe is down to low oil pressure either wrong oil used or not enough oil in the sump.

Thats as far as i got with it, i had had enough, think i had it for 1 month and did about 400 miles in it, all the time the dealers i bought it from knew fine well there wasva huge problem with it
