Can't find answer and need one quick!

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have looked through the forum and searched through Goolge and can't seem to find the entire answer to this...

Yesterday the window glass in my Fabia estate just disappeared into the frame. Electric by the way.

I've got the door trim card off and am now down to the metal skin with the speaker etc on it. I need to remove that. i can see the glass through the little rubber viewing port so I know it is still there and not in lot of pieces.

How do I get the metal skin piece off? I have taken all the bolts out of it and whilst some of it moves it still appears to be stuck fast.

Really need to get this done today as I only have today off!

Any help please guys? Tearing my hair out a bit here...

If you're sure you've removed all of the bolts, it will be stuck down with sealant all the way around the edge.

Be careful though, as the glass is still attached to it so will be heavy to remove. It will make it much easier if you can manually move the window up, then through the big holes, undo the bolts that hold the window into the runner and tape the glass up into the door.

Have a look at the guide below :)

Right now hang on...it is the left door however I can only see glass in the viewing port nearest the lock...no retaining bolt that I can see. Should it be at both ends or this end?

(It also doesn't help that I can't get the other one out at all...)

And thank you for the reply...I guess I searched for the wrong things... :giggle:

The bolts are on both sides, but they are at the bottom of the glass.

You'll really need to get the window up somehow to be able to get the carrier off easily.

Can you not get hold of the top of it and pull it up now you have the door card off?

Nope...thing will not move at all...might have to try some rubber gloves to try and create a bit more friction on my hands...

Cannot get this thing to move at all...well that's not quite true. The side closest to the lock will move a little bit but not the rest of it at all...

Guess it might be a trip to Skoda coming up...****

So I've now worked out it is the end nearest the door hinge that is stuck. Just cannot see what on and can't get the glass up far enough to undo it all to take it out...this is getting annoying now...

Any ideas from anyone?

Wiggle it? try bumping the electric window switch? Douse it in WD40 or similar?

  • Author

Wiggling it doesn't work. I'm a bit apprehensive to just squirt WD40 into the doot when I can't see what is behind it all and the state of the cabling that runs through where I would be squirting it.

The window is stuck somewhere down that side. I'm guessing it is the bottom of the arm stuck somwhere. Problem now comes that I can't get the window up to undo it all...

Have you managed to get it off?

Might be worth taking the motor off, as thinking about it, that might be preventing you from lifting the window.

Window is back up. Can't get the metal skin off due to the STUPID door lock connector which just will not release.

Think I found the cause of the problem though...one of the rising parts which the window sits on is in two bits and the cable from motor to winding wheel is not attached to anything at all (short one to top)

New regulator time methinks...I have put up another question about this but will drop it in here also. New regulator from Euro doesnt show the metal skin in the picture...Ideally I want one with the skin as well. Does anyone know if it is just the picture and they do come with the skin as well?

And I had the motor off initially trying to free it all (just as an aside...)

Ahh, I couldn't get the door lock connector to release either. I ended up getting a pair of 45o needle nose pliers to undo the clip as I just couldn't get enough pressure with my thumb as the metal door carrier is still in the way at that point.

Once that was undone, the carrier then came off no problem.

You can get repair kits off ebay for the regulator. About 1/3 of the price of a new regulator. Includes new cables, clips etc. Everything you need.

Ah...the repair kit could be the way forwards I'm thinking. It is the runners for the window that are broken more than anything I can see.

In fact I wonder if there is somewhere that would do just that one part...might have to get on the phone to people...

Also what shape should the bottom of the window glass be? Mine has parts which look like they have broken at some point but there is no glass in the bottom of the door. Nearest bottom adge to the lock has a curve as does the glass in between the two runner pieces...

It's probably worth just replacing the whole lot.

I tried to source separate bits when this happened to the Polo I had before my Fabia, but it's just easier to replace it all in one go.

Yeah that's what I have on my screen currently as well...will be hitting the button on that very shortly methinks...
