ABD Cold Air intake on order.

Featured Replies

I've perused the ABD site in the US and came away ordering one of these

70.lan.1.k.jpg

It differs slightly from the one offered by Impossible Performance, as it has a little tube welded on the side.

I'm not sure if I've made a mistake ordering this part, I just assumed that the little tube connected to the tube that normally requires a mini filter on the end.

I was considderring a Carbonio CAI but it looks like a ******* to fit.

Anyone got one of these ABD type efforts?

Umm it's the revamped version by ABD and Impossible Performance have been selling them for some time now as they are the agents over here. I don't think you can actually buy the old type now, could be wrong. How much are they on the ABD site?

They're $229 which works out about

thats looks nice....

Carbonio... piece of cake to fit, and being made out of carbon fibre does not allow as much heat in as the ABD one. Dont over oil the filter....personally just use brake cleaner on it to clean it.

I was ready for ordering a Carbonio for all those reasons mentioned, but the ABD one just looks better IMO. (not that I'll be able to see it under the bonnet...)

I also trawled thru the other threads and the Carbonio doesn't seem that easy to fit.

I went to Awsome GTI today and got a DV in preparation for the CIA. It's a pollished Hyperboost HX recirculating affair.

I tried to fit it today, but all the Jubilee clips on the car are of a non reusable type, so I'll have to go to a motor factors place tomorow and stock up on clips and a torque wrench.

Carbonio is a bugger to fit if you have xennons and are lazy in not taking the battery / bumper off.

Now spring is here I fear I'll have to clean it...knowing my luck I'll over do it, knacker my maf, blow my engine.

Still it will make plan B easier to swallow.

Plan B?

Go on blow it up or at least bend some rods....loads of fun for all of 5 minutes. :D

The ABD version is a bugger to fit (or at least getting the K&N filter on to the end of the in-take pipe) if you don't take the bumper off.....

So how should one clean the air filter without risking knackering the MAF sensor and therefore bending pistons and other expensive stuff like that???

I've fitted a few of these now and i've never taken the bumper off.

Mind you you have to take the triangular black plastic panel under the front bumper off. Attach the filter to the pipework once you have pushed it down the hole before you attach it to the inner wing.

Therefore you have to wrestle around on the floor under the car, that's why I reckon its as easy to whip the bumper shell off (wrestling around on the floor looking for all the torx screws admittedly).

Or you could just drop in a green filter into the OE air box and get the same results. :D

but doesn't sound anywhere near as good!

So how does damaging the maf kill the engine? overfueling?

Don't say that, mate, your spoiling my fun! :(

I managed to fit my DV tonight with some shiny new jubilee clips. (downloaded a guide from Forge Motorsport.) The original tamper proof crimp clips were a bit of a tw*t to remove but I got it on (so to speak) eventually.

The results?

I can't detect any discernable difference whatsoever.

I tell a lie, the power delivery seems a lot smoother (placebo effect?) I think the diaphragm in the original Bosch one may have been past it's best. There's absolutely no difference to the noise. the 'whoosh' when I accelerate seemed a bit louder but that was probably because I was driving about with the windows down. I couldn't hear the fabled 'pssht' after acceleration, probably because it's a recirculating valve. In fact it's just a metal version of the Bosch, but with a piston. And more expensive. I'm losing faith in this modification lark...... :D

I used to have the ABD CAI (though now swapped for a Carbonio).

It's LOUD :D

Certainly the loudest of the Octy filter options i've heard.

It's not too difficult to fit, helps if theres someone there to help as it's a tricky one person job. Allow about 2-3hours. Take off the inner wing panel for better access to the space it's going to go into.

Have you noticed any difference in performance between the two?

Sorry been away for a few days, no can't say i've noticed any difference between the two. The ABD's just louder. The carbon fibre of the Carbonio might keep temperatures down a little better over the summer though i don't think it'll make a massive difference.

Wit the DV30 and my std air box on you can hear the DV blow off alot louder the Bosch 1! And wit the K&N it's it's just a loud as a BOV!

ABD America wouldn't accept my credit card as it's a nasty 'foreign' one.

One trip to Awsome GTI today and I am now the proud owner of a Carbonio CAI. (worked out cheaper anyway) I will be buying some wrenches an that tomorrow and spending most of the afternoon removing sections of my skin from my knuckles.

I may post pictures if anyones interested.

Fitted this yesterday and had a perma-grin ever since....

It's Loud! And how come I can hear the DV now? It's almost as loud as yon boy racer's Scooby down the road.

There's an increasing 'roar' as you accelerate, then a definite 'pssht' as the accelerator is released. 3rd gear is best.

I'd swear there's more power as well, and the delivery seems smoother. the gearing seems longer for some reason. I can get to ***mph in 3rd! (on a private road)

It took 3 hours and a few mistakes until I got it right. I didn't need to remove the wheelarch liner either, just temporarily moved all the cable ducting to place the filter down below.

Well worth every penny IMO. :D:D:D
