Airbag Warning Light

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As if having an ESP warning light wasn't enough, my car has now decided to light up an airbag warning too! Anyone care to look at this trace and offer an opinion?

Regards,

Richard.

No reason at all, however if the fault is still there then the DTC will not clear.

True, but it might be that if it's a signal issue, it might have just been a glitch, and perhaps I'll not hear any more about it for another 6 months (crosses fingers)...!

Although, it'll probably just re-appear immediately (or not clear as you say).

I also have the air bag warning light on on my Mk2 Octavia. N199 I believe was the fault code I was told.

The dealership I bought it from knew this was a common problem with Octavias as they have the same issues with Leons (was a SEAT dealer) so they were good enough to replace all of the under-seat connectors. Unfortunately this has not cleared the error and the airbag system isn't actually covered under my warranty.

I'm pretty sure that they're telling the truth as they went into detail about the work done and I noticed the seats had been moved and the black plastic covers just by the sliding mechanisms hadn't been replaced 100% properly (weren't fully slid/clipped in, now are), so is it actually heard of for a side airbag to genuinely fail!?

I don't have a diagnostic unit but am keen on getting one (any advice which one would be good) to investigate this further as I don't really want the expense of a new airbag if at all possible. As this is such a common problem, is there a how to/picture guide anywhere with regard to investigating side airbag faults?

Thanks guys...

I will see if mr AA will do it tomorrow as I think I'll be calling him out once I get to work to tell me what the engine electrical/diagnostics light has come on for (car seems absolutely fine to drive, no idea what it is really!) Failing that, I shall have a look whose local and can help, ta.

Right, to update on this, and to save starting yet naother new thread, the engine fault light never came on again after that day. I purchased a VAG diagnostics "eBay special" recently, run through it and I get no engine fault codes. However, I do still get 01217 in the SRS/Airbag system, which is the same "drivers' side air bag resistance too high." If I clear the code, the light goes out, then comes on agian about 1 second later.

I've slid the seat back and popped off the cover, parted then re-made the yellow connector and had a good look at the black one too. They both look in tip top condition so I believe they could well be the new ones the dealership I got it from said they replaced. Are there any other tests I can do with a multimeter, like comparing resistances across certain pins to what they should be, or is it a trip to Skoda and new air bag time? Would someone with the proper VCDS software and a laptop be able to do any more?

Thanks.

If you bought a car from a dealer and it developed a fault soon after doesn't the Sale Of Goods Act cover you regardless of what any warranty may or may not cover?

I am not familiar with the Sale of Goods act, but unfortunately as far ask I know it it is down to them to prove that the fault wasn't there when the car was sold to me, and unfortunately in this case, that is true, as the light wasn't on then. If someone can calrify this then I'd be very happy to hear. Moreover, the air bag system is not covered under my extended warranty either damn it! I would also appreciate any practical advice one what resistances I might expect to see across various pins - I'm sure I have read it on here before but can't find it again right now!?

Thanks.

I had the airbag light come on about 2 year ago.

It turned out to be a yellow wire broken, between the car body and the drivers door (peel back the concertina type wire loom cover first)

I just soldered the wire and had the codes cleared.

Might be worth a check.

Do NOT test any of the airbag system with a multimeter, you'll trigger the airbag. Beyond checking connections and clearing faults there is little that can be done by the end user.

if you go prodding pins to check resistance, the multimeter will put 9V on the circuit to do this and then BANG the bag will deploy leaving you with the need to replace a lot more.

Upper limit exceeded is usually a dodgy connection or wiring problem. A visual inspection is the only way to check the airbag system.

Glad I ask questions here first before trying anything! Thanks for that warning!

I presume though, that it would be possible to match the air bag circuit's resistance and put an equivalent resistor across the car- (not seat-) side of the side airbag connector. I would, however, like my airbag on the side to work just in case, so would like to fix this. When the rain eventually eases up I'll check the wiring to the door by looking under the flexible conduit - I've had other cars where wires have broken at similar joints to the boot tailgate (Mk2 Golf).

I had this couple of years ago. Was not the connector at carpet but actually under the seat base. This was cut off and wires were soldered solid and taped up. Has never faulted since. Apparently the connectors can cause resistance to fluctuate hence light comes on.

Have had as much of a proper looks as I can at this with the seat in place this evening.

Checked either end of the flexible conduit to the deriver's door: What I can see of the wires that isn't under the original fabric-like tape looks absolutely fine.

Unclipped the wires under the seat to have a good look: The wire in the first 90degree elbow looks fine, as does the rest of it up to this point, but admittedly it's under its original fabric-like tape still. Tracing the wires further back, I notice that there is yellow tape wrapped around a section roughly 10cm long. Tracing the wire from there, it goes straight up the back of the seat, out of reach.

I thought that this was definitely the issue at first, as in something's been badly mended before. However, after reading this it would appear, from what I can see/feel, that this work has already been carried out on the drivers side - there is no connector here along the length of the wire under the seat and it's the same yellow "VAG" tape.

Taking the seat out doesnt look to be too hard a job (is it!? - just 2 plugs and 4 torx bolts (I'll have to get a bigger bit but don't mind...)) so is it worthwhile doing that, peeling back the tape and having a look?

I was also thinking, is it possible to check the resistances of the CAR side of the yellow connector to see if there are any breaks in the part of the circuit which runs through the door?

Unless anyone can give me a good reason as to why not, I'm going to stop by Halfords on the way home tomorrow and pick me up a torx-bit of the right size and have a go at getting the seat out tomorrow afternoon. Then hopefully peel back the yellow tape and have a look if there are any obvious signs of damage to the wires underneath (not sure what I'll see if it's been heat shrinked, but worth a go I feel).

I removed the driver's seat earlier, thoroughly checked the repaired wiring by peeling back the yellow tape to see that it had been excellently done using crimp connections and transparent heat shrink. Damn! Checked the remaining connector (seat to car floor) and it looks excelelnt on both sides - plus I can see off-cuts of wire confirming they replaced the connector.

Re-fitted everything, tried clearing codes and surprise surprise the air bag light immediately came back on.

Then I wondered if the word "driver" and "passenger" were interchanged for LHD and RHD cars or not. So out came the passenger seat, cut off the under-seat connector and soldered the wires together, heat shrank them, wrapped them individually in electrical tape then wrapped the whole lot in electrical tape. Re-fitted it and still the same error code. So that's not true then, it IS the (RHD) driver's side at fault.

I was a little worried about the array of warning lights which came on when I reconnected the battery. But seeing none of them were fault-code related, I proceeded for a little drive to be happily greeted by them all turning off by the time I had gone about 10 metres down the drive! What a relief! Air bag one is still on though!

So, I am 99% sure it's no under-seat or seat-to-car connectors, is there anything else I can do, or will it have to be the dealers? I still reckon I should be able to check the car-side of the loom resistances to see if there are any breaks in the wiring elsewhere. I don't know the resistances, but as a starting point I could proble the 6 (2x3) combinations possible on the passengers side and compare them to the drivers side? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a mk2 Octavia air bag system - there doesn't seem to be a haynes for anything other than adiesel and I don't really want to buy that.

Mr rogger I feel your pain, these things can be really annoying as i also found! As stated in my earlier post when I had this problem it was resolved by the connector being removed and the wires soldered solid ,the fault code was then cleared and has been good ever since(about 2 years now) . It's looking more and more like a trip to dealers or a good Indy. Hope you get it sorted anyway.

You need VCDS or a dealer to turn it off.

To update:

I got a 2.2 Ohm 10W resistor from Maplin today and fitted it to the two pins (not ground) on the car end of the airbag loom to the driver's seat. Diagnostics unit connected, ignition on, reset codes and the airbag light went off AND STAYED OFF for the first time in over 4 months!

However, this resistor is quite big and doesn't stay in the pins because of its own weight. I'll either have to purchase a replacement connector like the one that goes to the seat side of the loom (foolishly binned the ones from under the seat when removing them a few months ago!), tape it in place or get a physically smaller resistor. I guess i could solder extension "legs" to the current one but that's not really ideal, far better to get the replacement connector I feel. I don't know how much current flows in that circuit precisely, but its likely to be a good few Watts given the 12V system so I'm unkeen on putting in a standard tiny resistor which is typically rated at 1/2W to solve the weight issue.

So I guess now this proves there is nothing wrong with the car-side of the driver's side airbag loom, nothing wrong with the seat wiring (connectors replaced/removed), so it must be time to save up to have a new drivers side airbag fitted.

Anyone had one done before and an idea of the cost including labour?

Glad I read this , as I seem to be having the same problem. Mine of 2006 vintage , only recently had this happened. Been cleared once via VCDS , for a while now , but just came back. Mine does not have the soldered connections under the yellow sheath. Recently had it serviced an they said i need a seat loom cabel , but wanted £130 to get it done .....Ouch. Does this mean there is a replacement cable ? or is this just the soldered original loom with the connectors removed? Took both seats out and everything looks fine. Even cleaned them with electrical contact spray. But have not have on VCDS again to see if it clears again.

Got to say having a look at the connectors , it's quite a simple connection with nothing to really go wrong. Does this happen to later cars ? If not are the underseat looms interchangable ?

Don't really want to head the way of new drivers side seat air bag if there is nothing wrong with it and it's the loom at fault , cause the problem will still be there.
