Octavia DSG Box Knocking and Noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am running a 61 Plate 2.0 CR Diesel VRS DSG and been getting an annoying knocking sound when it shifts gear. This was mainly when changing down between 3rd to 2nd but also noticed it when you accelerate then take your foot off the throttle suddenly in low gears. Its as if the shift is loose (if thats possible). ive also noticed a faint burn smell now and again so dont know if this is related.

Anyone have any ideas. Cars obviously under warranty but want to know if this is a common problem.

Cheers all

Moved to octavia 2 :-)

its not your exhaust knocking of the chassis somewhere? Just putting it out there

No. Ive checked by running at low speed and then stabbing and releasing the throttle quickly which enhances the knock. This has got worst over the last month. Ive read some of the other threads that have suggested that maybe the oil level could be low? The car has 6k on the clock and is driven lightly (most of the time as it is used as a response car) and ive noticed that the fuel economy is varied despite a regular route. Over a 40 mile trip I can get anywhere between 44 and 58mpg. Could this also be linked.

Sorry for loads of questions

Sounds like engine mount movement. I hate this aspect of my car; get on and off the throttle fast and drivetrain slack is apparent.

Definitely something wrong. Mine is an 11-plate with 18k and is fine. The DSG has been great.

Mine is an 11 plate TDI with DSG with 9500 on the clock, and there are no strange noises from anywhere.

Are you feeling any extra vibration through the floor?

I have noticed a similar sort of thing in mine, especially the 3rd to 2nd downchange when approaching a roundabout then seeing a gap and giving the car some throttle just as it goes for a downchange, not so much of an aural knock but a rough change. Car is coming up to 3 years old and 22,000 miles. Booked in for service next week and advised them that I want this looked at too.

Will get it booked into dealers and see what they say. I guess the VAG software will not pick a fault up as I have had no indication on the dash but if they drive it (and I will make sure they do) they will hear it. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for responses

Mine does this too puzzler, it is going into the skoda garage on tuesday, i am expecting trouble as the service reception guy told me on the phone 'its supposed to do that'. Eh, no its not!

Same as you though, happens when down changing from 3rd to 2nd.

I told the service guy on the phone about it and will not show fault code because no light has come on so I have asked them to look at it and maybe do a factory reset and recalibrate the clutch packs.

I have DSG and I have noticed a knocking noise when at low speed (low gears) and come off the throttle. It doesn't appear to be gear change related on mine - just does it when at low speeds and come off throttle. Not all the time but getting more regular. Did anyone get any resolution to their problems? Any advice before I get garage to look at it.

Thanks

DMF?

DMF?

sorry mate can you expand? whats the DMF?

The flywheel. (Dual mass flywheel)

Thanks, Is this a fairly likely culprit? Is the DMF prone to knocking on the Octavia?

It's one possibility. however I'd also have close look at all the engine mounts first, as this is another possible (and cheaper to fix) cause.

What age/mileage is it?

The car is almost brand new - I've had it from new and its almost 4 months old. 3300 miles on the clock. Its been noticieable when crawling in traffic - probably within last 2 weeks

My car's a '57 plate with 20k on the clock. No knocking noises at all. I think it has had an easy life though and is a lower powered engine.

Definitely sounds like engine mounts to me. I have had this on many cars before and is normally the back gearbox mount as this is the one that deals with most of the twisting movement of the engine. They can wear quite quickly with a torque-y engine.

Mine is driven moderately too - I haven't hammered it, probably overly mild driving if anything.

I have it booked into the Garage next Weds to look into it (and my knackered rear window wiper motor!).

Yes, get it back to the dealer.

Very unlikely to be DMF on a car so new. Something has probably come loose.

My bet is engine mounts. Could just be that they have come loose.

Just an update. Currently in mitchells Skoda in ellesmere port. They have heard the knocking on my car too. They have run some diagnostics and there is an issue with the Dsg. It appears to be electrical. They have sent the logs to Skoda.

I've recently noticed a slight clunk / knock coming into round abouts from 3rd to 2nd, I'm not sure if it's the DSG handle lock releasing (while the foot is on the break) or the box itself.

I've also noticed only slightly a creak or some sort of rubber squelch sound from the front when driving off gently, I'm going to guess that this could also be the problem and it might need new rubbers somewhere?!
