New Central Electronics module

Featured Replies

I have been having problems with dead front wipers with washers working fine, rear wiper and washer also fine and no abnormal control actions. After going through the components and fuses I changed the central electronics module and the wipers are now fine.

The replacement module (6Q1 937 049 D) was from a 2005 fabia and mine (6Q1 937 049) is a 2001. I'm guessing the car it came from had ABS (mine doesn't) because the dash shows ABS light on and blinking peeping (!) light and VCDS shows several modules having trouble contacting the ABS module I don't have!

What seems to have happened is this replacement module seems to have re-coded the Can gateway from 00012 to 00014 because I didn't re-code it, but comparing early scans with VCDS to current scans show this change. Recoding the gateway back to 00012 has solved the imagined ABS faults by telling other modules the car doesn't have ABS. I'm not sure I have the new central electronics module correctly coded. My broken one was coded 09234 and the 'new' one 09226.

Does my train of thought above seem reasonable?

Can I just re-code the new module to the same as the old one?

Nigel

If its working all right now why not just leave it alone, if you give me your engine details I can probably work out the code for you, but changing the central electrics unit for one with a updated part number makes it difficult,

Thanks freelanderman. Its a 2001 classic1.4 8v MPI with no extras apart from air conditioning. Eng ATZ. Gearbox EMH. Basic skoda radio cassette, version 1. Immobilizer but no alarm. Interior light does do the fade over a few seconds thing. Electric power steering. 60Ah battery. 90A alternator.

No central locking. Mechanical boot and filler flap. Mechanical windows. No heated front screen. No ABS, discs front drums rear.  No cruise control, electronic stability etc. No trailer hitch. No electric mirrors. No sunroof. Only drivers airbag and front seat tensioners. No GPS. No seat belt reminder. No park control. No phone install. No front fogs. No rain detector.

Currently down to zero faults from it's peak of 24 faults registering on VCDS!! Most proved to be due to unplugging the battery and low battery power.

Old Central electric module was coded 09234. The new one 09226. I have now recoded this to same as old one. Wipers still work OK. I don't know what else this module controls so can't practical test much further but it's still registering no fault codes.

Hi,

Please see following list of coding for your module

Equipment Value

Activation of the function EKP 1) - for vehicles from 07.01. 16384

Rear window wiper with Convenience circuit 08192

Impulse-controlled tailgate remote release 01024

Headlight cleaning system relay fitted 00256

Heated exterior mirrors 00128

heated seats 00032

four-door version (two-door version = 0) - for vehicles up to 04.02 00016

Identification of rear backrest position - for vehicles as of 04.02

Interior lighting control 2) 00008

electrical load management active 3) 00004

electrical tailgate remote release fitted 00002

Trailer coupling fitted 00001

1) Fuel prepumping after opening the driver door (pressure rise before switching the ignition on)

2) after removing the ignition key (separation of S-contact) the interior light comes on

3) Controlled power user shut-off (heatable rear window, heatable seats, heatable exterior mirror, air conditioning system) when there is high loading on the generator.

NoteIf the tailgate remote release is contact-controlled enter 0.

e.g. vehicle with

Rear window wiper with Convenience circuit 08192

Impulse-controlled tailgate remote release 01024

heated exterior mirror 00128

heated seats 00032

4-door version 00016

Interior lighting control 00008

Tailgate remote release fitted 00002

Code number: 09402

The display shows the control unit coding, (e.g. 09402):

Hope it helps

Brilliant. My 4 door classic is so basic. I have rear wipe, 4 doors, interior light control and that's it. Codes to 08216.

The old module was coded 09234 which is 08192+01024+16+2. Rear wipe, remote and impulse tailgate, 4 doors but no interior light control. (Was this another second hand module that had been fitted but not coded to the car?)

Here be dragons! Please correct my ramblings if I'm wandering in dangerous areas and don't any other learners take any notice. I don't know what I'm doing.

Am I right in thinking that the final code can only be made up of a single combination of numbers from the list you give. If that is so then it seems that if you give the module a code that is any mathematically correct sum of the above equipment values, it recognises and operates the equipment that is present and it can find but doesn't get overly worried about the equipment the code tells it it should have, but isn't actually fitted so it can't find. (Presumably if you enter a code that is not mathematically possible from the equipment list the module crashes.)

I suspect this is true up to a point but my ABS light suggests that some codes carry more implications than appear in the list. i.e. after fitting the 'new' module (coded 09226) I found the ABS light came on with beeps and the Can gateway had re-coded from 00012 to 00014. The new module seems to have convinced the car it had ABS. It definitely doesn't. And there is no entry in the CEM list for ABS. Could that mean the ABS information is carried in the module and silently activated if you enter an equipment level/combination that only comes on cars which would also have ABS? Like the front windscreen wipers. The CEM plays a part in their function but it is not coded for in the list as all cars of any equipment level will have them fitted so they are silently coded for.

Can the central electronics module recode the Can gateway like it seems to have done?

My brain hurts. I will enter the code for the bits I have, 08216 when I next get to work on the car on Tuesday. See what happens.

Seeing devonutopias post of 16. 4, my nocturnal ramblings show my newness to this VCDS thing. I am still trying to understand how it works, what factors it takes into account, what it does if you enter incorrect valid or invalid codes, what codes are already in and unchangeable, what valid codes you can enter that might cause chaos, etc. His post answers one of the questions. If you enter a valid code for equipment your car has not got you can cause trouble that is difficult to put right.

So anyone reading my post please note, I do not know what I'm doing!

Do please correct me when my enquiring wanders into dangerous areas and please, any other learners don't take any notice of my ramblings.

Hi,

You have picked up the coding basics very well, too answer your question as to can one unit code another, I really dont know.

As long as you keep a log of all the origional codings to fall back on you cant go far wrong.

I have learned a little more about fitting a slightly later CEM than the broken original.

Coding for CEM earlier than 6Qx 937 049B is slightly different to 6Qx 937 049C. Use the correct list of codes to make up final code value for address 9.

CAN gateway coding is apparently stored in the CEM but accessed through address 19. This explains why after fitting the replacement second hand CEM my car had a wobbly about ABS being inaccessible. The 'new' CEM must have been from an ABS equipped car and carried with it CAN gateway coding 00014 which says include the ABS module in all the electronic chat. But my car doesn't have ABS. Hence much beeping and flashing lights. Recoding CAN gateway to 00012 solved this problem.

All features overseen by the CEM are now working as they should.

Victory is mine!
