Cant get one of my brake pads in what am i doing wrong

Featured Replies

Ok so new to skoda baught a 2002 fabia 1.9 sdi 101k miles

Brake disks had bigger lips than an ape so orderd new pads and disks

Started on drivers side and suprisingly everything came apart fine and new disk and pads fitted drivers side so next started on passingers side

Wheel off caliper off old disk off

New disk on retainer screw in place

Pushed piston back in with g clamp put pads in caliper go to put on but no go

The pad closest to the piston is fine but the pad on the outer side well its as if its to thick i just cant get it to go over the disk the calipers seem fine no truoble with sliders so wtf is going on the pads are as im aware correct and like i sead drivers side pritty much fell into place

Im gna ad some pics so you have an idea of my prob

Thanks allll

if you look at pic1 youl see the caliper is bolted to the hanger and the space for the pad on the side of the disk away from the piston is smaller than the thickness of the pad therefor i cant get the pad in

If you haven't already fixed this. Unbolt the caliper from the mount, fit the pads in the caliper then offer it up to the disk. It should be obvious what is the problem, probably the sleeves that the guide pins run in are protruding.

Ye if you look at the pics i uploaded youl see what i mean

If the guides are protruding push them into the caliper

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like the "height" of that disc is wrong - maybe check that disc or discs against what you have taken off - its the "top hat" dimension I'm referring to.

I tend to buy OEM supplier bits.

Or, that piston is not fully retracted.

Have you removed the filler cap on the brake fluid reservoir?

If not the fluid level in the reservoir has been forced to the top and has nowhere to go so the piston will not go back far enough.

If not the fluid level in the reservoir has been forced to the top and has nowhere to go so the piston will not go back far enough.

Also, its good practice to let the fluid out through the bleed valve and not forced back the lines which in worst case senerio could cause the ABS module a problem.

Doesent matter make/model of car, but, I always use levers ( with bits of wood to protect disc-the old pads don't matter as they're going in bin etrc) to get old pads as far back as possible, BEFORE removing calipers. .You will need two levers per pad,and apply presure evenly. I find that there's never a need to take cap of master cylinder ,as there's an air hole to compensate . Never had any ABS problems doing it this way, as I suspect designers of ABS have compensated for this in design . Most times ,I find that pads go in easily, and that a few pumps of brake pedal are needed to resite pads. The lips are caused by the pads not contacting the whole area of the disc, and are used by MOT scammers to persuade you that new discs are needed( usually by advisory) . From Haynes , the disc parameters are same as mine - New =22mm,replace = 19mm. Best way to check - get a cheap micrometer ( I got mine at ALDI) , use spacers to bypass the lip. With spacers in position, zero micrometer . Then ,with spacers in place measure disc. It's also useful for checking pad thickness. It's amazing how much respect you get from MOT man ,when you quote the parameters . Would you change a tyre at 5mm tread ,if Mot MAN SAID IT "LOOKED " low?

I've had this from a tyre place, looking for work ,at 43k. They said my disc was worn, by looking at the unworn part .i checked mine at 55k to find that they were 20.5, halfway worn ( or if an optimist, halfway unworn), when I changed pads with mininimum exceeding MOT requirements . So don't believe the so called experts on an Mot. But ,from on here, I've seen a lot of mention of the caliper bolts stripping the threads on the support-so take care.

Did you check the disc against the old one before you fitted it? It could be the wrong bake disc by the looks of it, I take it those are 256mm discs right?

but he got one side on alright-2 discs, different sizes in the same box????!!!!!!!!!!

Ye one side fitted perfectly without any problems ive even tried another set of disks just the pas side is giving problems

Its not the sliders

I just dont get it without any pads in with the caliper bolted on as it should be as you can se in the pic that the space eather side of the disk where the pads should be is diffrent the side where the piston is has liads of space for the pad thats not the problem but look at the opposate side of the disk where the other pad should go the gap between the disk and the outer of the caliper is not wide enough to fit the second pad in and i just cant figure out why
