2006 Petrol VRS Aircon not working....How to check compressor?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Last year my 2006 petrol Octavia VRS' aircon stopped working. It was not getting cold. I thought it might need a re gas, so took it to a local garage and had them re gas it for me. It still didnt work after the re gas so they said its most probably the pressure sensor and changed that for me but this still didnt fix the problem. Then winter came along and i forgot about it till now as the weather will hopefully be getting warmer soon and i'd obviously like working aircon for the summer. Ive read that the compressor's are prone to failure but have not really found a definitive guide on how to check this for sure. I'd like to diagnose the problem before letting a garage loose on it with a blank cheque book!

So can anyone tell me how to check it please?

Thanks in advance

Jon.

Start the car leave the a/c on, with a torch & maybe a mirror have a look at the centre bolt of the compressor wheel it should be spinning in time with the pulley...... If it's not compressor is buggered mate.

Thanks in advance

Jon.

Yeah its not spinning :(

Does this mean a complete new compressor or is there a kit to fix the problem? How much would i be looking at to sort it out?

Thanks

Jon.

It's a common fault on the earlier models, VAG released a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this fault.

You basically need a new compressor, new drier and new condensor, I may have missed some parts but it's going to cost £600+

Mine went about 4 months ago (56 plate Octavia vRS TFSI), I have a copy of the TSB, if you PM me your email address I will send it to you.

Mine went last July (56 plate petrol vrs) and I needed a whole new system, luckily I had an extended warranty. It took 4 months to get the parts and had I had to pay for it I would have been looking at over £1200.

Sorry.

Which is the compressor pully?

I too have an 06 petrol VRs with, I believe, the same problem. A local VAG specialist ran a check and stated the clutch is not engaging. Prior to the failure, the was a "clunk-whizz" from the engine (which nearly stalled). I presume the clutch has sheared??

Im the third owner of the car (50K miles) and mostly has dealer FSH. When I purchased the car the service book was lost, but I had a major service (47K) at the local VAG specialist immediately.

I approached Skoda CS but they totally refuse to help.

Bogwoppit - You refer to a TSB for this? My question is if this was a known fault, what does the TSB state? Should the aircon pump been changed during previous services??

I really cant afford the £600 odd quid quoted........

mine went also 2006 vRS on the day i picked it up from dealer wasn't impressed but luckily it was done on warranty and service manager said it would have been expensive took them couple of months to get the compressor though because like mentioned previously its a common fault and probably the same part on most VAG cars ,

What's the normal route if the bolt is spinning?
