Advice regarding lenses

Featured Replies

Im a pure amateur when it comes to photography, so bought myself a canon 1100D to use for personal occasions, Iv been looking at canon lenses for use for Motorsport events and have come to the conclusion i need something like a 70-300mm lens, now looking on amazon there is one that is £330 which says UMS on the title and then another which doesn't have UMS for £110 I'm wondering if someone can tell me the difference?

Thanks

Hi

Not sure what UMS is but in the Canon world USM means Ultra Sonic Motor.

This is the motor that drives the auto focus on the lens. The alternative probably being a micromotor.

Micromotor lens tend to be cheaper than USM ones.

The advantages of USM lens are quicker focusing (good for motorsport) and quieter focusing (good for nature photography).

I use a Canon DSLR for motorsport and have the Sigma 120-400 lens - very good quality. Perhaps worth thinking about as an alternative to Canon lens.

Thats super cheers guys just help abit of understanding, ill take a look at the sigma

Presumably the cheaper one is the non-image stablised version. I got that one with my 1000D and couldn't get decent results with it. I sold it and bought the 55-250IS and I am much happier with that lens.

I've got the Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD for my Canon 60D, it does some nice shots.

If you go to Amazon at the moment it's £315. A slight rise from the £305 I paid for it just about 8 weeks ago.

I recently got a new Nikon D-SLR and this lens came with it. First outing with the kit was a Brands Hatch for the BTCC, achieved some good results.

With the same lens and a mono-pod I captured this the same night -

It also has a macro function, which comes in handy -
