Revs not getting past 4000

Featured Replies

Evening!

I've just swapped cars with my dad and got his 06 fabia 1.2htp. I've just been out in it and it won't rev past 4000rpm. This isn't normal is it? It just gets to 4000 and sticks there.

Any advice?

Driving your dads car like a The Stig, boss!

But serious note, that doesn't sound right, mine does it sometimes as needs remapping.

Hope you get it sorted.

It wont rev past 4000 if your parked if thats what you mean.....

No, it does it when I'm driving. In all the gears.

Well somethings not right, it should rev all the way round to the red line on the rev counter if you are moving.

I think I'm getting to the root of it. Apparently the engine management light has been coming on intermittently.

Am I right in guessing that the rev restriction would therefore be down to the car going into safety mode?

If I am right then I suppose it's off to the garage. I wonder what kind of warranty parents usually offer?

BTW, does anyone know of a decent garage in south Birmingham that would be able to help?

Right, so after another week or so of driving the problem isn't as clear as I thought.

The engine management light is always on. The garage said it's an oversensitive sensor and as fuel consumption isn't affected I'm inclined to leave it.

Sometimes the car revs around to the redline (not that I drive it like this, but I've been watching how far it goes, and sometimes it just won't get past 4k revs as if it's limited. The Skoda dealer said that the safe mode is 2k revs, so it can't be that. There doesn't seem to be any consistency related to engien temperature, gear etc that I can pin it down to.

Any more views?

An oversensitive sensor, is a faulty sensor and should be replaced. The engine management light should never be on, if you leave it on then if something else fails then you will never know. Replace the sensor first and have the fault cleared, this could lead onto other things.

EML is also an MOT fail now, so you will have to get it sorted sooner or later

This is a very old thread but just wondering if it was ever resolved as noticed that mine is doing the same thing now

Holy thread revival! All jokes aside, do you have any warning lights and access to a code reader? IIRC anything that the car has saved from previous faults should show up.

Yeah  its an oldie 🤣i read code p0341 camshaft position sensor. I'm wondering if a new sensor would fix it. I did notice that just before it happened I had to crank the engine twice to get it started. Car has only done 54k but I guess it's possible the chain has skipped a tooth or gone a bit slack. Debating to just fit a new sensor first and see if that cures it 🤔

I haven't had that problem with my 1.2 (on similar mileage @ 55k) but I reckon you could try that. Someone with more experience may be able to help though.

I can't remember which flavour of 1.2 yours is Piescoffer, but a friend/neighbour of mine with a BMD-code 54 bhp one in a Polo recently had a cam sensor fault which was just the sensor, so well worth a try, I'd say.  Grab one from a scrapyard car though if poss, rather than spending proper money.

Thanks guys mine is BMD also. It was strange it has only done it the 1 time and I noticed it was after it took 2 cranks to start. Once the engine had been switched off and restarted it was fine and I have done about 150 miles since then without an issue. I'll keep an eye on it but if it does it again I will try a new crank sensor as that code seems to relate to that. I was concerned that the chain might have jumped a tooth or stretched or something after reading other comments, causing an implausible signal at the sensor  but I think it's a duplex chain and doesn't rattle so hopefully was just a minor glitch.
