Magnetic sump plug

Featured Replies

Never knew these existed. Or maybe never thought about it!

So basically any metal fragments in the engine will be attracted to it. Is there really going to be that much to bother?

Had a magnetic sump plug fitted on old Ibiza Cupra made by ECS tuning, I had a bag of washers supplied with it.

Do you get supplied with washers or use the OEM washer from the dealers? Cheers.

How the feck did you end up with a that in your sump??

:giggle:

LOL!

Reminds me of when I was adjusting the valve clearances on my old felly. I left the feeler/thickness blade wedged under one of the valves and never noticed. Put the rocker cover back on with the blade sticking out and took it for a run. When I got back I saw it while I looked under the bonnet. Un-did the cover and the blade sticking inside the cover had gone. The engine had munched it. Was fine though. Just brought the oil change forward! lol

Some oil filters over the years have been manufactured with magnets, K&N for example. I used to use one on my bikes, as you say it's quite enlightening when you look at what it's ended up catching.

Wondered what the noise was!

Some say there's nothing new under the sun.

Which reminds me of my first BMC 850 Mini.

This had a magnetic sump plug which served for both the engine and gear box oil.

The plug looked like a normal sump plug which had a very strong magnet fixed within it.

In those days I used to change the oil every 3 months as it was so cheap, and every time I took the plug out it was always covered with small pieces of metal looking like iron filings.

Still surprised it is not fitted as standard today by all manufacturers.

I wonder if you simply stuck magnets on the oil filter itself would it achieve the same effect..

i.e. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pack-20-small-Neodymium-disk-magnets-8-5mm-dia-x-2mm-N30H-High-Temperature-/140705529952?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20c2b40060#ht_1622wt_1163 (120c enough for oil temps?)

Which I assume is the same as the sump plug magnet thing above.

I always have an old magnet from a dead computer hard drive stuck on the oil filter.

Great idea, but sadly we can't do that on our PD 1.9s, The oil filter sits inside that alloy can thing.

I wonder though, seriously would there be any signs of metal fillings in modern engines meaning we'd benefit from these sorts of things?

Very true, may just stick one inside the filter then next time. Im due a oil change soon so I'll let you know how I get on.

Thought I would revive this topic, as seen as I am going to change the oil on my felicia, and was thinking of doing the same thing. So question is, how did everyone get on with the magnetic sump plug / magnets on the filter, did it seem to work?
