2.0tsi remap

Featured Replies

Loving my vrs but think the chassis could easily cope with a bit more power . Was looking to get a remap but have a couple of questions - car is a 2010 petrol tsi. Am i right in saying that the ecu needs to be removed regardless of what company you go to? Was thinking of Revo software as I've used them for various cars over the years and never had any issues - they also have a dealer near me in Scotland which is a bonus.

Also when the car goes into the dealer for a service are they likely to perform any software upgrades that will wipe out the remap?? I've heard of this happening with BMW, Merc, Audi etc? Any advice or opinions greatly appreciated!

Unlikley you will need to remove, as it can usually be done via the OBD port. I have a 2011 TSI and had no problems doing it that way, and know others that have. It has mainly been the CR boys that have had to bench flash them I believe.

As to who you go with, well there are 2 or 3 which most people on here go with and get recommended all the time.

I went with Shark, using their STS remote unit, and have been VERY happy. Rolling roaded at 255bhp @ more importantly 325lb torque which makes for great overtaking. I would deffo use them again & strongly recommend you talk to them as their aftersales is as good as it gets.

Is Shark the only map you have experienced on the tsi vRS, i.e. what do you have to compare against?

To use an analogy if you had never drunk lager before and tried Fosters you would think it was great. If you then tried Stella it would blow your mind.

I've had a number of cars remapped but never once have I needed to use their aftersales.

Had experience of other tuners, so not new to the mapping world. Tuning my cars go way back to the R5GT days, although not remapped a TSI before. However I know what to look for and what to expect, and Sharks exceeded my expectations.

With regard to aftersales, I had to visit their site after my car developed a problem not long after loading the perfomance map. They never quibbled about it and spend half a day diagnosing, rolling roading and tweaking the map. Turned out to be totally unrelated (faulty spark plugs which misfired under the extra perfomance) but they never charged me for their time.

As I said in my first post, there are other tuners, which are also recommended so don't want to get into a "who's the best" spat, as this site is littered with them. I was merely giving my experience based on the thread title, which if you have similar experiences should also share with the OP, and then he can make a balanced and subjective decision.

I've driven the tsi vRS with both Shark and Revo remaps on so I will share my experience. To cut a long story short, my friend got his vRS very shortly after mine and decided to go for a Shark remap as they had an offer on at GTI international. We compared them both side by side, including driving each others, and concluded that the Revo [still only running performance mode 1 at that time] was a bit quicker and felt a bit more torquey. More importantly for us, the Revo car just felt smoother whereas the Shark car seemed to hesitate on full throttle. I've since heard a number of other people comment on this including Nicky Boy yesterday.

He got a second map from Shark which he loaded on and whilst it had much less hesitation, it also felt like it had much less power and this was evidenced by the gap widening when compared to the Revo car. My friend felt like his car was being used as a test bed and was concerned about the lack of testing on the maps before they were released to customers and in the end lost confidence and switched his custom back to Revo.

To be fair, Shark provided good aftersales support and gave a full refund. As mentioned above their aftersales support appears to be good but between my friend and I we have had countless remaps on various cars over the years from various tuning companies, large and small, without experiencing any issues and needing aftersales service.

A lot of people on here have Shark remaps and they're happy with them and that's great, but how many have actually experienced a different map on the same car?

Revo have had their fair share of bad reviews over the years and their aftersales can be far from perfect but they have a massive share of the market so it's inevitable that some issues will arise and get raised on the forums. I thought my Revo remap was excellent even before I had experience of Shark but that's just reinforced my view that I made the right choice. I am however tempted to see what the APR offering is like though.......

There are many good & bad stories of experiences at the hands of tuners large and small, thats why it is good to hear as many views as possible before making your mind up. My biggest reason was knowing the aftesales would be there should anything go wrong, and lets face it they can.

With regards to the Shark map on the TSI, I know of Nicky's problem(s), and as far as I am aware the latest map is the one shared with myself and Rob_e to name a couple. Mine runs absolutey smooth, feels linear and pulls hard, and I'm sure Rob's does so not always clear cut as there are other factors that change things, as my spark plug issue highlighted.

Anyway, I acknowledge Revo et al are all good alternatives and would't rule them out in the future. As you mentioned APR are looking interesting, especially teaming back up with awesome.

I'm sure I'll be staying within the VAG fold (S4, Golf R etc) in the near future so keeping one eye on them!

I'm thinking of going to Revo as my Skoda Dealer offers it, so should any 'issues' arise they will cover it.

I was going to get the Shark during the group buy on here but I was out the country when they sent out the emails !

APR also do TSi remaps :)

Any experience with them though Carl, that's the $50,000 question?

I am very happy with my Shark remap using my plug-in STS unit. My car is a 2010 petrol. I work up in Bellshill area neil_f so happy for you to experience my car if you want.

You may find you need some choice suspension upgrades once you get more power; most people do.

Well considering i've had mine mapped with APR from about 6 weeks after owning it i'd say so ;)

You waited 6 weeks! Didn't know you went APR. What do you think?

Cheers for the replies guys. Has anyone had their software deleted during dealer servicing??? - I know this happens with other brands??

You don't read the forum much then :p It may not have been 6 weeks it might have been slightly earlier. I put a couple K miles on it first to ensure no build issues.

I think the map is very good. Maybe not as powerful as the REVO offerings but i can safely say that it is no slower on the road ;). The delivery is very smooth and OEM like. I have the High Output version which supposedly has 30bhp/30lb/ft more than the normal map (Last time mine was Dyno'd on JKM it was 240bhp/280lb/ft) but i will let the Dyno be the judge of that one as i doubt it is running 270bhp.

I missed your write up because I spend most my time on the octy II sub forum. Good write up anyway, glad APR resolved your issue but would of been better not to have the problem in the first place I guess.

All tuners have problems from time to time. It's how the problem is rectified that is key here. Lets just say that, in my experience, had that been Revo they would have point blank refused to acknowledge the software was the issue and blamed my car.

I spent £2.5k on my last car chasing a problem that was categorically proven to be Software and Revo still denied it! So i never used them this time. Don't get me wrong the Revo maps are very good (if a little aggressive) but when something goes wrong their first apportion of blame always goes to the car. For me that's not how they should do business and they should assist the customer in providing an answer to fix the problem. Granted not all problems are the software as they don't write **** maps and it sometimes genuinely is the car. But when it is the software, their reluctance to admit it leaves a bitter taste. So they never got my custom this time and i don't think they ever will unless they have a change of attitude.

I don't disagree Carl, they've probably just got too big and don't really give a s*** about the customer but you can't knock their product.

Nope you can't.

But APR's offering is equal (certainly in on the road performance with an identical Revo car) and the customer support is better. Wether this continues once they get a better foothold in the UK remains to be seen. But i certainly hope so.

If not i'll be going elsewhere next time :D

I put my car back to stock whenever going to the dealers, or when I leave it with anyone else. The remote units allow to to swap & change maps whenever you want, so no problems if you were to get any software updates etc. You also get a immobiliser map as well so good for leaving when you go on your hols without the car.

I'm not aware of anyone specifically losing their map due to the dealer overwriting it, but have heard 'rumours' of it happening. I know Shark would supply a new map should it happen for a nominal charge (maybe free), as I remember someone asking previously.

Another plus for APR is the Security Lockout on the TSi which REVO (and i think Shark as well though happy to be told otherwise) don't do. Basically works the same as the REVO Anti-Theft on the TFSi in that it disables the Accelerator. All done via the cruise control stalk.

I'll certainly be considering APR next time. This was my first choice but Awesome changed to Revo before I got my car and I had always liked Revo anyway.

Was the Revo car you compared against on performance mode 1,2 or 3 just out of interest?

You can do it with Revo using the SPS key that goes into the OBDII port.

Tried 2 and 3. Both cars DSG and i think he was just loosing too much in wheel spin.

I even tried playing with the settings of the SPS using the Select software but it never did anything

Not on a TSi you can't. It doesn't work trust me.
