Rear wheel arches and sills?

Featured Replies

Washing the car the other week, I noticed that the rear wheel arches are not clad in plastic but some sort of rough material. Also why have Skoda left the sills uncovered below the plastic as when you look at the underside it looks rather crude. I have looked at other Yetis and all appear to be the same, any ideas?

You mean in the arches themselves? The arch liners are a material rather than plastic as it absorbs road noise better making the interior quieter.

LOL Yeti fur! Makes sense but whatabout the rough finish below the plastic sills?

Do you mean the sill at the bottom that runs between the front and rear wheel archs?,if so yes it does look like a really poor finish but,its like that on all Yetis like you say.

Yep thats the fellow, but why? Not noticed it on other similar cars?

It's painted, so I don't see what the problem is. It looks the same on lots of other similar cars.

And to be honest, do people actually bother to look at the sill below the doors?

Also remember that anything stuck/fixed in this area is in a high risk area to form a moisture/dirt trap!

It's stone guard to stop damage and thus corrosion on the sills.

+1 to Graham.

The bottom of the sill is a major element of the integrity of the bodyshell. Several layers of metalwork are spot welded together, together with drainage holes, strengthening pressed in ribs etc. The plastic sills covering this "rather crude" area is an excellent feature, and one of the reasons why I chose a Yeti. I can't see how you can say the sills are uncovered under the plastic trim.

The plastic covers the metal edge from scraping on rocks and road debris. It's only when you get under the car and behind the sill can you see any metalwork at al l :wonder: there are a few "lumps" on our car, but it is wax.

If only more cars were built to such a standard.

Mine is Candy White and it stood out as soon as I saw it. I have painted mine with black body schutz below the plastic, so now it looks better and has more protection against things thrown up by the front tyres.

All this talk of a poor finish on the sills is making me worry, is the area mentioned easily visible, or is it a hands and knees job?

Don't remember seeing it when looking at them in the showroom.

I don't fully understand what the OP is moaning about.

The sills have a finisher below the doors and then below that the usual painted metal bits with a flange where they join the floorpan. You have to get onto your knees to see the flange! That appears to have a coat of stonechip on it before the colour coat.

+1 to Graham - again.

I also have been out with a torch examining minutely the sill area now talk is of "poor finish"

I have never seen such well executed welded flanged joints, and then covered in what looks like a PVC coating, and then hard wax dripping out of the drain holes. They are sills to drool over/dream about. Well built isn't in it. They are very well built.

I can't understand why people find these "faults" that don't exist in the real world. Try comparing a Ford Cortina sills to a modern car - try examining a rusty exhaust system in detail - I could go on but it it highlights my SOG tendencies :giggle:

If you look at a white one like mine you can clearly see about an inch of white painted sill that doesn't look right below the black plastic cover. I painted mine just to make it look better

Agreed, but it isn't a FAULT as the OP appears to be implying.

No its definately not a fault, just a little more thought to the finish, only visible when viewed from say 20-30 feet away

At first I thought it was a paint defect but upon seeing other Yetis it soon became obvious it was a case of 'honest Guv' they are all like that' so I am not bothered now.

Was not a moan in the slightest just curiosity as I have never noticed it on other cars, but that is also probably due to it be higher of the ground then other cars I have had. Thanks all for the responses as you learn something new every day!

Then my apologies, but a few of us did think it was a moan.

Mine's normally so dirty you can't tell!

I'm just glad I ain't got a Yeti,
