Android Ice Cream Sandwich update!

Featured Replies

In case any of you happy campers hadn't heard/weren't bothered, it seems Android software version 4.0 was released for update today... bon voyage. :)

where the feck do they get these names for software

Yeah, they should've have used blokes names for the Android releases, like Brian or Kevin or Neville.

ICS seems to run OK on my HTC1x and Vi40 tablet

mine came with version 4, long story short, galaxy s2 was sent back to o2 for repair a couple of times, started out on v2.3, came back from o2 with v2.5, sent away again & came back with v4.0. the best part tho was everytime i got it back from o2 it came with the tesco mobile settings. i think it all depends on what network your on as to when you can download the updates but i think it should be the same whichever network your on, i think v5.0 will be called meat n chips.......

I think the Android names are stupid too, and thats deliberate as to get people talking about it.

If I didn't already have an iMac & iPad, I would choose either the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the Note.

I wonder how long before Eaton Mess or KnickerBockerGlory is released ?

A tad late.... Already got a thread under way here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/235149-ics-has-just-become-available-for-sim-free-sgs2/

And I wouldn't touch it with the proverbial barge pole as it seems to have caused people no end of "fun & games" with battery life being demolished, Bluetooth problems, phones freezing & going blank.

Guess how many symptoms I have got with my formerly perfect working SGS2? All :swear: 4!

Every codename, aside from the pre-release build Astro and Bender, is based on some sort of dessert and they're released in alphabetical order. Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich. An unconfirmed source claims 5.0 will be named Jelly Bean.

any one else having troubles with this? i updated my S2 the other day, having problems with mail (mainly crashing a lot and taking an age to load emails) also my bloody bluetooth in my car keeps randomly disconnecting and my phone then randomly reboots itself....

Not for the note yet which is annoying!

As I understand it the ICS update is only currently available for certain models or if sim free. While google have release ICS it is up to the various network operators and manufacturers to adapt it to their system. My S2 is tied to tmobile who have not yet released ICS for the it, hopefully when it comes out officially it will not present the same problems some are experiencing.

That said I could be talking a load of c@@p as I am no electronics or software expert.

This is correct - the usual cycle is Google release it, the manufacturers then adapt it to make it work on their devices and then it's passed onto the network operators who tweak it to add their logos and bloatware. This is why the sim-free folks can usually get it ahead of those under contract.

My S2 is one of the latest ones with NFC and apparently ICS is due to land on it in the next couple of months. Hopefully the existing S2 customers can help iron out all the bugs before then so I have a nice easy migration ;)

Just been randomly surfing and found a few links to ICS and the S2. Looks like some operators have released it already with Tmobile due to release it from today, but no sign yet on Kies or Tmobile. Have to wait and see how it goes.

I would have thought it was possible, plenty of Android forums out there doubt you are the first to want to do that.

What network are you onor is it sim free?

If you're happy with rooting and applying a custom ROM then it's fairly straight forward (you'll need to back up your data first). If not, you'll have to complain to your provider and see if they can do it for you - may have to take it into one of their stores...

my mate said he's gonna stick a different version of ICS on it for me, says its a lot more stable the one from samsung is full of crap thats why its unstable...

I've lost audio streaming via BT to my PC, after much hassle of connecting & disconnecting with the car, that seems to have stabilized and works perfectly. Battery life with the extended battery has gone through the floor.

You can do a flash yourself, you need some software called Odin & your USB cable.

Just got the tmobile ics update and all seems fine so far. Will have to see how it goes.

I forgot I made this!

I feel guilty. My phone's fine. :(

Hark at you lot. I'm still on Donut.

Perhaps this Donut should get a new phone... ;)

Full day of ICS and no real problems, just getting used to the new menus and layout. Only thing Not working is the headphone button to pause or play my audible app, works fine on media player! Probably needs an audible update to account for ICS.
