Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have just checked the power steering fluid and it is a browny red colour, which I presume measn someone has put normal ATF fluid in it. Will this be OK to leave or do I need to change it ASAP?

What's the official way to change the fluid? VW vortex say I need to remove the lower pipe from the PAS pump and drain it out then refill, but MKiv's say disconnect the return pipe on the reservoir and let the pump pump the old stuff out, and keep the res topped up until the new stuff runs through.

Cheers

thinking about this i'd disconnect return and feed from the reservoir then empty reservoir with turkey baster

then put feed pipe in new bottle of G4 and return in an old milk bottle

get a friend to start the car and then stop it when you shout.

it should take around 10 or 20 seconds to flush the old fluid out of MOST of the system. (i know this doesn't empty the rack properly so moving the wheels at the same time could be the answer

you will know as the new fluid coming through should be green.

when this occurs stop engine, reconnect lines to reservoir and top up to level

If you have ATF in your sistem is bad, very bad.The rack seals will get cracked anytime.Change it now! There are hundreads of broken racks caused by ATF .The oil must be G 004000 type.

The power steering fluid can be drained very easy.Under the car disconect the thick hose from the pump, and you'll drain most of it 0.6 of 0.8L .Moving the wheels doesn't help too much,I already try it.And don't start the car with no fluid!

A good alternative for OEM G004000 you can find at any local store and it's FEBI power steering oil wich has G004000 vw spec, fully compatible.I'm using it now.

Cheers STS and IulianE, I'll get some fluid from TPS or a dealer as soon as they re-open after the jubilee malarkey lol.

Just to let you guys now, I changed the fluid today, and it looks a fair bit better to say the least. The old stuff was a cloudy brown goop, so I guess somebody has added some other fluid (Hopefully they've used PAS fluid and not engine oil or brake fluid) at some point and it's reacted with the VAG stuff.

There's a light film on all the inside of the reservoir too which hopefully will disappear. I'm going to change it again in a few months to be sure.

I did it by draining the tank, removing the top pipe and putting it in a milk bottle and keeping the tank full as it pushes it through the system. It's amazing how fast it pulls the fluid through though. It can empty the reservoir in about 3 seconds, so I used a bottle of fluid pretty quickly. Next time I will buy 2 or 3 bottles so I can get a good flush.
