In Gear Performance

Featured Replies

I'm hoping that the fitment of a new "D" type diverter or cut off valve as skoda call it will fix what I think is a sluggish performance (and thanks to the guys at Shark for the tip off).

Meantime, anecdotal evidence is just that, OK so I only just outsprinted a BMW 118d from the severn bridge tolls the other day and that took me to 80 odd before I go in front; it's not just that occurence, after all his could be chipped of course, but it happens so often, I think something's not quite right. So in the interest of quantified data, I tried to time the acceleration from 30-70mph in 3rd gear only. I did it a few times in a most unrepeatable method, using the stopwatch on my watch. It took between 7.1 and 7.5s which doesn't seem too shabby, but bear in mind the potential for inaccuracy of measurement! So the question is, is this where it "should" be or about 1 - 1.5s faster (which is what another 30-40bhp ought to give)

Bear in mind it's an 06 FSI petrol running 50% tesco 99 and 50% Morrison's finest.

According to Autocar, they timed it in 6.3s through the gears, but not sure if that wold have been 2nd and 3rd gear. Did mine in 3rd only...

The bmw is a 2ltr engine with 150bhp, and the fact the car is smaller, lighter and rear wheel drive. rwd cars are always going to be better drag/ off the line cars over fwd cars, they also loose less bhp from the crank to the wheels.

From auto express: Quick, but no vrs.....to be honest, if mine is as good as it gets then there is a hell of lot of overhyping going on!

The 143bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel is smooth and refined too, picking up eagerly around town despite long gearing – it’s remarkably flexible. Performance is very strong as well, helping it drive further ahead of its rivals. It hits 60mph in 9.1 seconds, and has a maximum of 130mph.

Won't be much difference in weight.

Rwd traction would be a factor from a standstill

Suggest the difference would be the 'company rally car' factor - company cars (or hire cars) are always faster.... Not as fast as an Astra van though ;)

My 1.8 TSI with a stage 1 remap does the 30-70mph in 3rd in just under 6 seconds (using stopwatch on my wrist watch).

Just done a rough timed 3rd gear run - about 5 seconds - that's not foot to the floor either as it's Dsg so would try to kick down to 2nd at 30 mph

New dv fitted, and the car is transformed. The old one had several radial splits in the seal, so no wonder it was under performing! Now I can see what all the fuss is about, that's about 40 BHP gain for £65! I'll post some pics later so you can see what a worn dv looks like. I can only imagine what another 40 - 50 bhp would be like, fun for sure.

Good stuff! It's amazing how such component deteriorates so quickly. The old bosch (mk1 TT etc) used to last me circa 5k miles in my Lancia - but it was running 1.7 bar.... You could tell on the old ones as they sounded like an owl in the bonnet.

Mines registered on Vcds as not holding pressure - but only on one occasion - ill wait till it goes a bit before changing as it doesn't seem to be causing any loss.

5.4s :)

Sorry a bit off topic... Just done some browsing of 30 to 70 times on the net... By ek the tsi is pretty dam flexible!

I timed mine using my head... 5.5 to 6 probably (guessed it would be safer than a stop watch whilst driving!). Just thinking voice recorder on an iPhone has a time code on it...

Saw a bit of a mk2 rs focus with 390bhp whilst browsing - sub 4 seconds in third - bonkers quick for a fwd car (assuming its not wheelspinning in third of course!) gps would be better than a speedo

There are some nutters about at night - just driving back home from dinner out, and ended up side by side on an empty D/C with a mk I Focus RS. Took him a while to get past!

It's a totally different animal now, the thought of another 40+ horses seems oh soo tempting....

Replacing my diverter valve with a rev D tomorrow, any tips Steve?

Drive it like you stole it afterwards, because won't be long before the novelty of 21mpg average wears off......

I got a local garage to fit mine for £27, but if yours is not damaged / split you won't notice any difference.

It's fairly easy to fit. Jack front up and take lower engine cover off. The valve is located on the turbo, so release the electrical clip and undo the 3 Allen key bolts holding the DV to the turbo. Replace in reverse.

A small rachet setup for the Allen key is very handy.

I'm hoping by Saturday afternoon, this figure will drop to closer to 5s maybe even below. I have an appointment in Mansfield at 10:00 :sun:

Oh man, wish I'd done this, fitted mine this afternoon (along with fitting new rear discs and pads, which is a whole other 4hr story!), but even with the car up on ramps it was v.awkward! Having the hands of a small child would've helped. Also had to butcher an allan key to make a custom extension.

It was definitely needed though, I had a couple of related fault codes and the car felt pretty flat.

Also seemed to pick the worst day if the year for it too!

Did you notice much improvement?

Did you notice much improvement?

Yes, but as the weather has been so awful it's been difficult to test properly, hopefully we'll have some dry spells over the weekend so I can give it a proper run.

My original DV wasn't actually split, which surprised me, but the rubber was very soft and offered little resistance.

Cheers, getting the undertray off was easy anyway. :) The offside driveshaft doesn't half limit your access from underneath, and the allan bolt behind the DV is a bit of a pig! Also getting a clip off the connector was a pain. Anyway, done now!

I think it's a case of next time it'll be easier. A 1/4" socket set and a hex set makes the job much easier. The connectors are fairly simple, push connector inwards and push down the clip, pull connector to release.

I had the D rev on mine but there have been reports of them leaking. I now use the G rev diaphragm one, at least you can actually see if there is a problem.
