MacBook Pro - Triple boot Mac OS, Ubuntu, Win 7

Featured Replies

As per title - anyone accomplished this here? I started last night using rEFIt to bless the drive etc. Got all three OSes booting properly after writing the hybrid MBR myself but have a couple of niggly issues in Ubuntu. Perhaps anyone could share their experiences?

Cheers :)

I just run Windows 7 and Ubuntu as VM's, it does it away with the need to use bootcamp or multiboot. That way I can use OSX, Windows and Ubuntu all at the same time if I wanted, and I have done it a few times.

I am sat at work now, typing this in Safari using OSX, but all my work software is installed in a VM running Windows and I can CMD TAB between the two OS's.

Fair enough. I would usually also agree in use Virtual Box/VMware etc but native support is something I've come to prefer and require. I develop web stuff in Mac OS, and use Windows 7 for gaming and my degree work. I also love Ubuntu and some elements of my degree are also based in Linux now (some games we need to compile and run from source) and therefore native graphics drivers are kind of a requirement.

Out of interest what issues are you having with Ubuntu on Mac?

I used to use ReFit and dual boot OSX and Debian but never bothered to port it accross when I moved to an Air. I now run a big hexacore desktop with gobs of memory to run multiple VMs concurrently on top of Win7.

Remote Desktop (RDP) works really well using a Mac to control a PC with Oracle's VirtualBox running the actual VMs.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I've got it working pretty sweet now. I had some problems getting graphics working and a couple of niggly other bits like sound. Just a lot of Googling fixed the sound and AMD's Linux x64 graphics driver worked a charm. I'm actually running GNOME 3 now instead of Unity and I must say that I'm finding it really, really good - despite many people all over the net hating on it...

Ah yes, I've heard people complaining about Ubuntu's new look.

I used to work for PCWorld so used ubuntu live cd a lot for data recovery/diags on virus riddled PCs (ie every one that came back to PCWorld) but stopped after leaving (best day ever!).

As for drivers, I never did get on with Ubuntu too well - I always found they'd tried to make everything automated and therefore difficult to fix if something went wrong. If you want a "learning experiance" with linux try LFS or Gentoo - enough to make you have a breakdown but you learn a good bit out of it.
