Accident - Insurance write off?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Had an accident today in my beloved vRS. Coming to a roundabout I went into the car infront and then subsequently got shunted 4 times as cars joined the pile up.

Got quite a bit of front and rear end damage and was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this kind of damage whether or not the insurance would write it off? I understand that if the cost of repair is more that 50% of the value of the car it gets written off. Its a 10 plate valued at £12k I have front and rear parking sensors and xeons which will increase the repair bill.

Appreciate that it'll depend on structural damage that can't be seen in the pics but any ideas?!

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Doesn't look good tbh, did the airbags deploy?

Most mportant question, was everyone ok?

Is the boot-floor buckled?

Thankfully everyone was ok although we had 2 ambulances and about 6 police cars turn up!

No airbags deployed and I dont think the floor is buckled but cant get the boot open to check!

Had a look and the rear quarter also has a very small bend in it so the rear door doesnt close flush anymore.

And both xeons will need replacing as both have chips / cracks in them!

Youll find out in a day or two if its written off, personally I think it's a good chance it could be.

Do you want it written off? Ie would you want it back after it has been repaired knowing its had a substantial smash?

I'd probably rather it was writen off for that exact reason but I think its going to be very touch and go.

Does the car still start & drive ok? Or was there damage to the radiator and front of the engine?

I'd say a right off, and expect to have a very large claim lodged against your policy. The fault will go against you as you run into the first car, I guess your foot was not on the brakes so the car behind ran into you as your brake lights were off and so on down the chain.

£12k? Find me a 10reg CR with that spec for £12k. This is what the insurance will look at.

Doesn't look like a write off to me tbh. My mates 18month old Polo sustained much worse (transit van into back of him at 40mph and pushed him into barrier) and that was repaired. Quoted £4.5k to repair....2 months later when he eventually got the car back it must have been closer to £6k.

If it is quoted for repair then please ensure that it goes to a VAG approved body shop...My mates car didn't and 5 years on it is a rust bucket with every replaced panel having rust showing through (54 reg). I can't stress this enough to you!

Gooner, really bad luck! Glad everyone okay, and good luck with getting everything sorted.

Be careful what you admit to online. You may have hit the car in front, but that doesn't mean that everyone else had to run into you!!

I hope you aren't the fall guy for all the claims......

Sorry about your car but glad everyone is ok, it's only a bit of metal at the end of the day. I'd say it'll be written off and next years insurance my go up a bit.

I had my foot on the brake! I actually hit the car in front at about 15mph but the force of others hitting me increased the damage. Having spoken to my insurance company, the car I am liable for the car I hit but the car behind me is liable for hitting me and so on.

Agreed. You should only be liable for the car you hit. Anyone else who hit you was too close behind.....

Yeah that's how it normally works, everyone is at fault except the first car.

The funny thing is that the damage to the car I hit was probably no more than a new rear bumper but everyone else took the brunt of the accident. In response to the qu about the radiator, yes that's knackered.

Unless the car in front pulled out, changed lanes etc.

I don't think it'll be a write off as I've seen far worse than that at the front repaired and the crash bar seems to be ok at the rear (well the bumper is wrapped around it).

As for fault, even if you stop instantly without brakes, I don't think it's going to be your fault that a person behind you didn't notice what happened, was too close and so hit you.

Sorry about the damage

I myself don´t see why the car cannot be fixed. On the front end is basically just changing parts, no metal work.

On the rear you may have some but nothing really bad.

Around here if you are hit from behind at stop sign, lights and roundabouts or other places, and makes you hit other in front of you and so on, the guy that hit the first car that make the chain reaction is the only responsible. Why? simple. You only hit the car in front of you because someone hit you from behind.

Ok yes I know you must leave space enough to stop. Space to stop in case the car in front of you breaks not if you get hit from behind.

Ii you are at a stop sign, you are spaced enough to "stop" safely, if you get hit from behind what space would you need to leave between you and the car in front of you.

GLAD everyone is ok that´s the main issue.

I'd prefer if they rite it off as for me it would never be the same.

Anyone else who hit you was too close behind.....

This is the problem these days sadly.

Glad everyone was ok and i think they will repair that.

Ouch! Much more dammage than my recent prang.

If the companys sorting out your car are as fast as mine you should know within a week what will happen. Good luck!

What happened to yours in the end did they repair it?

I doubt that the car would be written off as from the pictures the damage looks relatively minor, front end looks to be just parts back to the slam panel and the rear looks like the brunt of the force went into the tailgate above the floorpan. there was a chap on here, can't remember who right now, who had a 4x4 drive into the back of him quite forcefully and his car was repaired. What will count in favour of a repair is that the airbags didn't deploy and the roof isn't creased. Glad you are all OK, that is the main thing at the end of the day.

Im with the don't think it's a write off, doesn't look that bad. But till you get the boot and bonnet open you can never tell. The thing that makes me laugh is when its mentioned about a body repair on a car there is always a member saying best use a vag approved body shop,
