Loss of turbo - TWICE!

Featured Replies

Right, so the story goes:

15 miles in to a 20 mile drive this evening, and I lost the turbo. There was no smoke, no strange noises, quick inspection under bonnet and couldnt see anything untoward just complete loss of any turbo power or noise. Car still drove but with less power. I allowed the car to idle for a few minutes, switched ignition off and started her up again; everything was fine. On the return journey, again after around 18 miles the same thing happened; I followed the same procedure as above, and everything was back to normal again.

Any ideas?

(PD150 hybrid turbo)

A very aggressive or just bad map causing the car to go into limp mode?

Good thing with modern cars you can plug them in and they usually tell you what's up. I suspect it was limp mode due to some fault. Might not necessarily be turbo problem.

Thanks for your replies...Car had a generic map when the turbo was fitted by Jabbasport, this was some time ago (over 3 years). I'm visiting a Skoda dealer on weekend to sort out by gearbox linkage I'll tell them about it. Only had the car a month and when something goes wrong I panic big time!!

If they try and charge you £80 odd just to plug in to read faults, tell them where to go. As 3 years ago, possibly turbo is a bit coked up and VNT vanes are sticking, causing overboost. Assume each time its gone into limp mode you were accelerating, perhaps up a gradient?

I must have posted my last the same time as you; all new to this ECU business coming from the world of mk1 Golfs!! I'll certainly ask them the charges before letting them near it!! I think on both occasions I was actually on an incline, nothing major, and would have been accelerating (not hard though) I'm super paranoid re. the turbo as I have shocking luck with cars. Can the hybrid be serviced?

Thanks for your help I was watching some vids of your VRS on youtube....NICE

That's my guess also.

Vcds would be really helpful if you can find someone close to you. Log channel 11(requested vs actual boost) this will show if it's over boosting. It's something like .3bar over requested puts the car in limp mode.

Thanks, I know a guy who is going to look via Vcds tomorrow.....Guess I need to tell him it's been remapped? If it is overboost, what is the next stage (As I'm not too clued up I just don't want to be ripped off)

Thank you for all your help

Sounds like the vanes are sticking and causing it to go into limp mode. I solved mine by getting under the car and pulling and pushing the rod on the turbo till it felt freer. Then gave it some hammer down the motorway and it's been fine ever since.

It could also however be another underlying problem with the map or a fault of some kind with another sensor etc. I assume the eml works and isn't coming on when it drops the turbo?
