fabia front brakes messed up

Featured Replies

hi

i replaced the hub and the shock absorber due to a bearing problem. i went and got the whole thing from a scrap yard and installed the thing on my car.

the majority installation went on very smoothly and no major problems.

however, when i started to assemble the brakes i found a problem. on the brake hub thingy there are two screws that keep it in place.

the bottom place where you screw in the nut (im not sure what it is actually called) was fine but when i started to screw in the top part the 'nut' would not go in the entire way. the place where the nut goes in has been eaten away and it wont let me screw the nut in. (sorry this is not the best explanation)

so i improvised and used another screw from my tool box and forced it in so it would do the job of the original (done cos i needed the car at the time) by holding the brake hub in place.

but the brakes feel weir now and im not sure what to do.

will that be a problem?

are there any ways of fixing it so the original can go in again?

what the should i do?

ps am a student and thus no money to go and let the processionals do it.

any help will be appreciated.

Don't drive it like that, you risk the caliper carrier coming away from the hub, its probably only being held properly by one of the bolts. It sounds like either you got the wrong hub for the brake caliper carrier bracket you have got, or you got a hub where the bolt hole is corroded or damaged. I'd hit the scrapyard again and this time take the caliper carrier bracket with you so you can grab a hub it will definitely fit on. That or drill and re-tap the bolt hole if you've got the tools

Ps. Shouldn't this be in the Fabia forum lol

carp, and yes the top bolt hole is corroded and/or damaged thats why i could not get the original nut fully in. the brakes do work but when i braked at 40mph the steering went a bit to the the left ( the right side has the problem).

that hub was the last one there. i spent £70 for that damn thing and they dont do returns and i spent 4 hrs changing the damn thing.

there has to be a way on fixing bolt hole without changing the entire thing.

ps thank you for the reply i honestly appreciate it.

You can take the hub off and try re-drilling and re-tapping the hole. You'll need a tap and die set or helicoil thread repair kit though (or if you know anyone you can borrow one off of)

Not surprised the car pulled left, the right hand side has basically got a brake caliper that's flapping around on the hub so it won't be braking too good on that side.

Fact on the right brake flapping about doing not a lot......

If possible, id replace the hub for one in better condition.. even if you did retap the bolt hole, you have real way of knowing how deep the corrosion has penetrated. Could end with brake caliper coming loose again quite quickly if the corrosion keeps spreading.

or (worst case scenario), brake hard, that one time you really need to, and have the car end up going in the ditch...

Followed by insurance company claiming your brakes werent mechanically sound or some such excuse and not paying out.....

TBH, brakes issues are the one part of my car i woulkd not touch myself... the bodge and it'l do down there.... not my preferred option!

Plus it won't pass your next mot in that condition for certain so realistically you are best to find another hub.

I know it was mentioned before but there are a couple of different brake types on the fabia I know I tried to replace my slider bolts which were ever so slightly bigger on the older models and so didn't fit mine.

Sorry to hear you're stuck but you can't "bodge" brakes whether your on the bones of your donkey or not. As suggested by chicken_eyebrow helicoil might be the handiest route My grandfather always use to say, "Any fool can go fast - it's all about how quickly you can stop!" He would then tell us the story about not being able to to top the ton trying out a Brough Superior SS100 down the East Lancs road back in the 1930's because he had no goggles and the flies were getting in his eyes around about the 90 mph. mark!
