Sill corrosion

Featured Replies

Hi on jetwashing my MK2 vRS yesterday i noticed that paint has peeled off the nearside sill which has caused it to start rusting. Im wondering if anyone else has had this problem and did they manage to make a claim on Skoda's 10 year corrosion warranty? Cheers

IIRC

I think the warranty will cover rusting from the "inside out". If the rust is caused by paint failing they won't cover it after 3 years.

Have you got a picture of the rusty sill you can post so we can have a look?

The plastic covers on my scout have helped protect the sills, so for me the rust is on the bottoms of the front doors.

Thanks for the info boys will post pix tomorrow ive booked in at Skoda for them to take a look, will let you know the outcome.

Seems to be very common. Happens just above the protective paint.

It's a bit after the fact but mudflaps are your friend.

If car is our of warranty then I would suggest trating the rust ASAP with some Jenolite or similar rust modifier and seeking the services of a bodyshop.

Unfortuantly mud flaps only protect the first few inches, the rest of the sill is just as vulnerable...

Went into Skoda today to show the service manager. He tried to shrug it off as 'stonechip damage' until I pointed out a few bubbles with no chips/scratches. He took some pix and sent them to Skoda UK, I await their response.

Will be interested to see what you get back. I've also spotted a few bubbles with no obvious chips. Mine is also an 07.

I don't expect much, I've never heard of any manufacturer honoring a corrosion warranty for anyone. Seems to be one of these things that's not really worth the paper it's written on.

Oh, I recognise that picture, ahh that'll be mine then :-)

It must be a common fault on all pre-FL MK2's. Just have a look at the sills on the FL version. The stone guard textured paint protects more of the sill !

That photo is of a car that's had the mudflaps fitted from new, as already mentioned, they really don't protect that much of the sill. (54 plate with 145K)

My brother has an 07 plate with 36K on it. Was telling him to keep any eye on the sills and make sure he gets a skin of wax on them when doing the rest of the car, turns out his is starting to look a bit scabby too, nowt like mine right enough.

Another place to watch out for is the sill edge just where the corner of the drivers door (nearest rear door). Mine is bubbling a bit there and noticed that my brother has the front sill protectors. Had a quick look to see if I could do a DIY rust repair/paint on mine and cover it. Turns out the exposed edge of his is worse than mine !

Also, at the weekend I helped a mate clean his 08 passat. A few stone chips on the door that were left resulted in a fair old bit of bubbling around them.

I'm not so annoyed at the state of mine now.......

Yes but something is better than nothing and they are a P-o-P to fit and visutally lower the vehcile.

Hmm, not so sure, the mud flaps on my previous car trapped grit in between them and the paint work. Over time as the flaps moved around going through puddles etc. it rubbed the trapped grit and muck against the paint and caused more damage than they prevented.

Once you get enough mud, leaves and road salt behind them it holds the moisture against the scratches in the paint too.

The rears aren't so bad as they are against the plastic bumper but the fronts are against the metal wing and sill.

OK if you take them off and clean behind them regularly but then it kind of defeats the object...

Never seen this on any Octavia over here, why is rust such a huge issue in the uk and always has been, if u mention a uk import here people always say rust buckets!

Is it the salt they use on the roads?

Mine is a September 56 plate.Still like New
