Car sounds like a bag of spanners

Featured Replies

Anyone able to shed light on possible source of a clatter sound coming from the front of a 04 plate vRS. It is audible over transverse ridges at low speed, typically around our estate which has tarmaced concrete with expansion joints. The car has just passed its Mot with no advisories and I've had a rummage around the underside of the front end to see if there are any loose heat shields etc and no.

Any suggestions? Engine mounts seem fine as there is no noise when deliberately quickly lifting off and on the accelerator. Car is low mileage (60k),

Thanks

Check the radiator mounts.

Usual suspects are drop links, console bushes with occasional issues with ARB bushes. Bushes should be evident from a visual check and a little persuasion. Drop links on my car looked OK till I bothered to take them off but they're cheap and very easy to replace.

A bit further along with this annoyance now. By a matter of Sherlock Holmes-style deduction, I have concluded it is the front nearside brake caliper. The offending rattle is gone when riding the brake pedal over bumps that would otherwise cause the din. I will get the wheel off tomorrow at some stage to investigate further but can already move the caplier up and down by a millimetre or two on the carrier with my fingers through the wheel spokes. This doesn't seem right to have vertical movement to such a degree and is not the case on the offside caliper nor my Octavia vRS (the Fabia has 312mm Octy disc conversion from a previous owner).

Whats more likely: worn guide pins, worn holes in the caliper body or, hopefully not, loose guide pins? I'm sure the carrier is firmly attached to the hub, otherwise I would expect to hear a clunk each time the pads bite on to the disc when the brake pedal is pressed and this is not the case.

Any thoughts?
