Let down again - Skoda Junk - time to move on....

I can't recall the last used car I bought and my present (3rd) Octavia is the first car for ages that I have kept, from new, longer than warranty (it is approx. 3.5 yrs old now).

It is the only car within my memory that I have had no work at all done under its warranty. I'm probably tempting fate badly saying that !!

If something begins to go on it soon, I will be in a real quandary as to whether to simply have it repaired, or to trade it in, bearing in mind how much I like it, and what you lose on a new car as soon as you drive it away from the dealer!!

I seem to recall someone saying that if you buy privately you even get a three month cover (citizens advice)

No you don't. If you buy privately, once you drive it away all problems are yours with no come back. The only exception being if it is not owned by the seller (ie stolen or owned by a finance company). You would then have the right to sue the seller for your loss when the car is reclaimed.

To the people who are saying you won't get a 6 year old car with 50k that's fault free, *******s! I've had citroens, hyundai's, a ford, a Nissan, a Renault and a couple of skodas all around this age a mileage and apart from a couple of wheel bearings, a track rod end on the first octavia and a clutch in the Hyundai I've never had a problem.

Most cars out there are easily reliable upto 10 years and beyond, I would expect to pay more than £200 per year in repairs unless the car had mega mileage. I think the op has just been unlucky and I would be pushing for the dealer to pay towards this repair.

Wow you have been very lucky to pay no more than £200 a year on repairs, the only 2 cars I have ever owned (out of 23 cars) to have made that was my Octavia VRS 2006 (then 18 months old) and my fabia 2.0 elegance which I bought at 7 years old, drove for 3 and only spend £70 on a steering angle sensor ;)

So for me, Skoda have been the most reliable cars.

My BMW 325i was on 48K when I bought it at 4 yrs old, 3 warrantee claims including a burst PAS pipe, a dry driveshaft flange and the biggest of all......24 new tappets due to a design floor that made them tick occaisionally. Cost of that last one would have been over £1000 if it wasn't for AUC warrantee.

Reading these threads it seems the same kind of parts cause the trouble (on our cars anyway). It always seems to be air con, DMFs, etc. I also had a cat' on the way out just at the end of my last car's warranty. The trouble is, any single one of these things is big money.

So that brings into the discussion should we buy extended warranties and do they cover relevant problems?

Never seen the point in extended warranties.

Put the £300-£400 into a seperate account. After the manufacturers warranty has run out you'll have the best part of £1500 put away for if its needed.

If it isn't then you've got a nice deposit for your next car.

Skoda UK's Customer Service is terrible.

My experience with Skoda UK has been the polar opposite, they've been and continue to be very good to me.

On a car not bought from them and out of warranty I've had at least £2,000 worth of repairs/diagnostics from them with very good service to boot.

A very happy Skoda owner here.

It would be interesting to know what they will do (i.e. pay for) and what they wouldn't ??

Well I reckon our warrenty repair has cost Skoda about £3300 +£3000+£750+£3000(again)+complete gearbox guessing £5000+£2000 odd = £17500 odd plus all the labour and admin costs

A new car would have been cheaper, by a fair margin

I'm fairly sure it won't have cost anywhere near that much!

Thats probably a production cost of 4000 punds, so it's not cheaper than giving you a new car. But it must be a record!

12 weeks car hire at £40.00 per day (that figure was on the paperwork)

2 No Mechatronic units (and i wa blythly quoted £3000.00 each)

A clutch pack, I guessed £750.00?

Then a complete DSG gearbox

Plus other costs to Skoda UK that I will not discuss

Plus technical support, endless computer time, plus labour.

Plus admin.
