Looking for Car stereo with built in hard drive

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

I remember few years back one could buy car stereo with build in hard drive, some of the models were with up to 30GB of space.

Do you know if someone still produce/sell them? I have over 30GB of music and it would be great if I could download the whole lot into my car.

Another option is, if there are car stereos with abilities to plug a removable hard drive using USP perhaps?

Any thoughts?

I was looking for the same reason and I think Alpine do a double din sat nav stereo with built in hard drive, possibly about 30g iirc. Not cheap though at about £700+

I gave up on that idea. However useful it is with the amount of music you have it just pays better to have just bluetooth streaming instead..

Well perhaps, good point.

ipod connection covers it for me , i have a 120gb ipod classic.

Some of the available aftermarket systems have a rear USB port designed to plugin USB memory sticks, some of these allow you to plug in laptop style portable hard drives and play standard MP3's. Then simply place the drive in the glovebox and remove it to update it.

For example this one.

Sony made a headunit a few years ago which came with 16Gb of memory but had to be removed from the market as it broke copyright laws because you could record straight from the radio onto the HDD.

I have had one of these headunits fitted in my 89 Golf Cabriolet for a couple of years now and it is much easier than carrying loads of cd's and cheaper than an iPod

Sony MEX-1HD

Flash storage is so cheap these days -I'd just buy a stereo that takes USB or a memory card. I bought a 32GB USB stick for £16 the other day
