Octavia VRS TFSI Buyers Guide?

Featured Replies

Hi chaps...

I'm hopefully going to see an 06 plate Octavia VRS in a few days - the petrol, not diesel version. I have skimmed a few threads about what to look out for but some are a few years old. I just wanted to see if there is any new / current information on known problems I should be aware of? I'm quite reassured that actually they sound pretty well screwed together and reliable. The car has only done 40k and looks to have been well looked after by the current owner with a full, documented service history.

I've fancied an Octavia VRS for quite a long time and always liked the MK1's... and the MK2's are just such an unbelievable bargain really, I think now's the time.

And yes - I'm a mahoosive lurker... I didn't realise that I'd registered here 7 years (!!) ago and this only seems to be my first post. Crazy! :)

Cheers.

If you've been lurking for 7 years you probably know more than most of us anyway

Well when I say lurking - I haven't actually been reading the forum ;)

I've heard very good things about this place though from a friend of mine who does have an Octavia - but I know him from another car club as he has two cars :)

The tfsi is fairly bullet proof as long as it has been serviced at the correct intervals and had consumeable items replaced at the appropriate times, i.e cam belt.

I need to check the cam belt situation (every 60k is it not?) but it has a full service history and I've seen the list of jobs done at each date it looks like it's been looked after..

Have you got a link to it? I think it's 60k for the cambelt but not sure. If it's only done 40k it will be on the original. Check the rear tyres for wear on the inner edge as the camber settings were revised on the vRS soon after it was released and an 06 will be an early one. My 06 had the correct settings when it came out the factory.

Looks good

Agree, it looks very tidy and well looked after. It's the best colour too IMO. Just needs the grill surround colour coding. A lot of car for £6,500.

Indeed. I've bought and sold a few cars in my time and having spoke to the guy on the phone I have a pretty good vibe about the car and the owner.. hopefully down to see it on Wednesday (wanted to go tomorrow but have other plans!) and hopefully it lives up to expectations :)

I was told (Capitol Skoda Newport) that cambelts were due at 40k (I just had mine done at 68k as I was misled by the original seller). Keep an eye on the oil level, some of them use an alarming amount, though still within VAG spec. I can also vouch for the rear camber problem, the rear tyres after 25k are almost through to the belts on the inside rear 5-10mm, yet the rest of the tyre has a good 4mm left on it. Just had it reset, and it was miles out.

I'll check with my friend on the cam belt situation for clarification - he runs a VAG specialists based in Kidderminster! :) 40k is a tad worrying but if it needs doing, it needs doing..

The advert is well presented, well written and with nice photo shots. Says a lot about the owner and likely means he's taken the same care of his car.

Well exactly.. it beat the usual standard of advert.. one or two photo's, and a few lines listing all the standard equipment that ALL of these cars have and not much else!

I agree. HUGE amount of car for the money. Go for it and enjoy!

Welcome to the petrol vRS club. It's a good place to be!

According to the advert it had its cambelt replaced in 2010 @ 19k! so you should be fine there.Looks a very nice car!.

Somehow I missed that - glad someone was a bit more eagle eyed than me! :)

At such low mileage it's absolutely ripe for a remap! I'd would also recommend you replace the Diverter Valve straight away (or cut off valve as Skoda call it) as these split on the older cars, and the performance is severely handicapped.

I missed the cambelt being changed bit, odd that it was done at 20k. It's very low miles for an 06; just about run in. They get quicker as they put the miles on.

This will be my daily and to be honest whilst I like the idea of a remap I'm not in any rush.. my second car is already well modified and the hassle with insurance has just taken out of the fun of it for me. Will probably leave it as standard for now tbh :)

Try to get it for £6000, then you can spend the other £500 on a Columbus head unit and you will have a nice spec car. I'd also recommend a PDC for the rear as they have a big rear end for parking!

If he's getting interest at £6500 for an 06 I'll be flogging my 07 after MOT. That's decent money for a TFSI and I fancy a change.

Slightly peed off - phoned this morning and someone is off to see it this morning.. I suspect it's going to sell.. back to the drawing board for me :(

Oh dear early bird catches the worm

There's a couple more for sale so if this does indeed sell, I'll have to arrange to go view some of them.
