MOT time for the old girl

Featured Replies

MOT is at 1030 this morning. Fingers crossed she passes (just like every other year). All I have done this year is change the oil and filters (oil, air, fuel).

Car is just over 197k at the moment, hopefully he won't find anything wrong with it. The only problem I have is mould under the passenger seat - brought on by a wet carpet - I am failing miserably to find the cause of this - might start another thread on this later.

Well I would love to report that she passed, but I arrived at the garage and I wasn't booked in (for any day this year!). Fingers crossed for Friday instead!

Scuttle panel drain points blocked with leaves is the usual cause of wet carpets

Indeed, I'll give them a check, but when I looked a few months ago (when the wetness started), they were clear.... :-(

Has the car got a sunroof? the drain holes for the sunroof can block & the water cant drain away correctly & can cause damp problems inside ther car.

I pulled off the scuttle panel to change the pollen filter, and I noticed that my previous sealed hole to the right of the pollen filter housing wasn't looking too good (I had previous run a cable through there and re-sealed it.

Anyway I pealed off all the old sealant and have applied a suitably large blob of roofing and gutter sealant. Fingers crossed that should help - I was able to suck water out of the carpet with the vacuum cleaner earlier.

Hardly any leaves/etc in there, I cleared out the wheel arch trims a few months ago.

Sunroof drains all seem to be clear - I have tested then with the car tipped at various angles to ensure it drains forwards/backwards as I tip water into the sunroof drainage tracks.

Sunroof drains are quite common, so worth a check if you don't find it's dried out.

You thought about putting a sealing grommit in there instead?

There is a sealing grommet in the hole, but it has a hole in the middle of it (from when I ran my laser detector cable through it)....

If the car continues to leak then it will get a good hosepiping...

Whenever you do get it in for the MOT, good look for a straight pass

Good Luck mate, Heres hoping she walks it :-)

Well I am pleased to report that she passed this morning.

197k miles on the clock.

Smoke Test was 0.41 (Oil temp of 88) [pass limit is 1.5 l/m]

Did pick up two advisory items:

The rear bushes on the front suspension arms have started to deteriorate - both nearside and offside.

But otherwise I am a happy chappy. Guess I will have to crawl under her shortly and fix them / replace the whole arm.

197k miles...she is still a teenager

Its great to hear your car is still going strong after so many miles.I hope mine is the same even though i wont own it at that point im sure!

I once had my sunroof leak a bit of water in onto the handbrake area. Is it possible yours isnt fully sealing when it closes and this is letting water in on the left hand side? Doubtful but thought id chip in :)

I re-checked the grommet near to the pollen filter, so that has a current blame for the dampness. There is no evidence of water stains/etc in the car to suggest the sunroof / roof lining / etc was getting wet. My only other thought was a door seal.... Or a hole in the floor pan in the rear passenger footwell!

I have to say I don't use my sunroof much as my "washing machine pipe elephant mod" is a bit smelly. I did apologise to the MOT man, but he remembered it from last year

Congrats on the pass!

Glad it passed, always great to hear a high(ish) miler can have such an easy time of it, overall. :)

The rear bushes on the front suspension arms have started to deteriorate - both nearside and offside.

I had that as an advisory about three years ago but not since...

Congrats by the way.

Did you replace the bushes or the arms, or do nothing at all?

My nearside headlight seems to need adjusting every year - we think it shakes/vibrates as the adjustment screw does not seem to have much "resistance" when turned (although it does affect the adjustment).

I did nothing!

Depending on who mots my car I may also get an advisory about movement on the top mounts for the font suspension. Some of these things are down to the opinion of the tester on the day.

I get the same tester each time, and to be fair I suspect they do need changing!

If Kevin does it I get advisories, if Mick does the test I don't.
