2.0 TDI PD 170 lumpy on tickover and judder before power band

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just got my car back, my car being a 2008 2.0 TDI PD VRS combi, from my local Skoda dealer after having the injectors replaced on a recall notice. Recently had an injector replaced at local garage becuase the electrics failed and the car would not start. (Skoda are refunding this) Also recently had cambelt changed and full service. Now the car is very lumpy on tickover and judders when accelerating between 2000 - 2500 revs when the power band kicks in. I thought new injectors would solve the problem but it hasn't. Oh, it only does this once it's warmed up. Any ideas??? It's not showing any faults when plugged in to computer either!! :drunk:

Is there any strange or different noises on start up? Is it only lumpy on cold idle or all the time?

There is a wealth of threads on here discussing problems with the injector recalls and poor starting.

As far as the juddering goes, first thing i would say is DMF

I don't know about the lumpy idle but the judder sounds like the clutch and/or DMF as others have said. My old Hyundai CRDT had this at only 43k. Does the judder get better if you accelerate as gently as you can past 2500rpm?

Thanks for your replies. Excuse my ignorance but DMF? The lumpiness is only at idle speed and the juddering is mainly when accelerating from lower revs up towards 2500 when it smooths out and power seems as normal. All very irritating and increasingly costly. Is it worth taking it to a diesel specialist or are Skoda the best bet?

DMF-Duel mass flywheel. Story of my life are DMF's, iv had two go on me now and they aint cheap! On a cold start is they tend to be noisy, this can be confirmed by depressing the clutch, if the noise stops, theres your problem.

Also for the judder at lower revs, it puts load on the engine when it falls out the torque band, may not last for long as the torque band is pretty healthy on these engines but mine does it all the time, as the flywheel gets worse this juddering will follow suit and soon get to the point where it will judder in every gear and over more of the revs and then eventually go bang but not really to worry, iv made a very knackered DMF (Mk4 Golf ARL) last 25,000 miles :)

Guys please don't always think the worst lol

Slight judder is normal and a caractoristic of these 2L tdi engines at low rpm but only if ur in too high of a gear, lots of people get very slight vibration under load or say ur in 3rd gear at low rpm and shoe it on then.

It's like torque vibration.

If ur DMF is going u will get it at higher rpm and taking off or at idle.

This might help.

Note some have had this from new and never got any worse so don't always jump too it's my DMF.

Yeah that is true davidrs20, infact all cars do this is they fall out the torque band but if something is driving like this on a daily basis (changing gear too early) then it going to lead to premature failure on clutch/flywheel and it will use more fuel.

I doubt this is the problem though. If it is then get an auto, when i was learning to drive, like most learners get their gears mixed up once or twice, getting 5th instead of 3rd ect and the car juddered but even as i learner knew this was wrong and what i had done by mistake then correct it.

If the car is driven smoothly, changing up every 2000rpm or there abouts there should no judder, as you will be higher up the torque curve, if it judders there something wrong

U just don't here of many Vrs owners with DMF problems that's all. Maybe the Vrs had a better one.

Do you know alot of vRS owners?! I know quite a few that have the DMF issue. Apparently they use the same flywheel as the 140bhp? This i never actually confirmed but A, would not surprise me with VAG B, I want to know where the limit of torque is if it is the 140bhp flywheel as my guesses are ill be over it or very close

Since I posted about this before I checked again and found that I was wrong, the 170 did in fact have a different part number DMF from the factory to that on the 140, so suggests it was uprated in some way for the 170 engine.

Both are 240MM however and what also threw me is that aftermarket parts suppliers often quote the same replacement part number DMF & clutch for both engines...
