A few questions about DIY turbo replacement

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My turbo is giving me many signs that it's heading for the pearly gates - bizzare jet engine noises on idle and oil in the intake despite removal of the CCV system - it is the original KKK on 115k miles so it's done pretty well. I would like to replace the turbo myself to save money and educate myself. I'm fairly confident with a spanner and don't see this as a major challenge. A few questions if I may -

1.) Is it wise to replace the turbo before it dies? I have no idea how much longer it will live for so I incur unnecessary costs. It could go on for another 30k miles!

2.) Has anyone on here done a turbo replacement DIY? Is there a guide by anyone on here or other VAG turbo diesel forums? I only currently have a Haynes manual for reference.

3.) Do you actually have to remove the driver's side driveshaft to gain access for removal?

Thanks in advance :-)

Mite just b me on me phone but what car u got?

Fabia vRS (BLT engine)

They are easy enough to take of actualy had mine of at work yesterday just to clean it out not quiet sure where the drive shaft bit came from but ive not taken that of if ur confident should take ya mayb 2 hours once u remove the inlet n all pipes there is loads of room 2 work

I did mine a a week or so ago. Fairly easy to do. I found it easier to take the engine mount off and drop the engine to get the turbo out as drive shafts are a pain in the arse to do on a drive!!

Cheers :-) I'd rather not be p*$$ing about with driveshafts - the holy book of Haynes says you have to remove it - it also says you have to replace every nut, bolt and gasket lol. Is that the engine mount next to the timing face? Are the exhaust manifold bolts a pain to access without removing the intake manifold?

Thanks Jasvrs. You mentioned you removed your turbo just to clean it - did you have to replace the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets on refitting?

Yeah thats the right mount. And i replaced the gaskets as i put a hybrid on but i used all the old bolts. The intake has to be removed too. Its impossible without doing that!

I wouldn't fancy doing it from underneath on a driveway! With the driveshaft removed it was still a pain in the ass on a lift.
