Rear wiper and boot catch, intermittent faults

Featured Replies

I thought I would list the intermittent faults I experience with my 1.9 diesel Roomster. I have had it for a couple of years now, and these faults are starting to annoy me, despite the car being a dream to drive. Needless to say, they never occur when the car is in for service, so I thought I would note them here in case anyone else has similar experiences.

1. Rear wiper occassionally develops a mind of its own. While driving along it will start working without me touching the control on the steering column. Sometimes it will stay on for a couple of days, before returning to normal operation.

2. In Winter, as soon as the ambient temperature drops below about 2 - 3 degrees Celcius, the boot catch simply refuses to engage, no matter how hard you try and slam the boot door. The fault appears to be in the lock mechanism, but no amount of lubrication seems to help.

As the service dept cannot replicate these faults, they are not very helpful about getting them fixed. Anyone else experienced these issues?

Welcome to the Club. That is the very irritating Roomster tailgate club.

If you lift your tailgate, you will see at the left hand side (at the top) where the wiring loom comes out of the bodywork for the tailgate electrics.

That is the problem, you will find damaged wiring due to the flexing when opening and closing the tailgate. I have had the same. First time the rear wash/wiper would not work. Yesterday, the central locking was acting in a weird way due to a broken wire to the tailgate handle.

The only proper fix is to get an Auto electrician to add a piece to the wiring loom at the place where the damage is occurring. The friend who does all the work on my vehicles fitted the car in today and everything is fine. He found and repaired 2 damaged wires. When it is convenient, a new section of loom will be added. I would not go to a Skoda dealer as they will probably want to fit a complete wiring loom at a ridiculous price.

Wilbur - are you suggesting getting an auto electrician to extend the length of the wires, when you say "...to add a piece to the wiring loom..."

I'll have a look at my brake light tomorrow and get back to you.

Yes .... that is the only permanent solution as far as I can tell.
