"Judder" on acceleration?

Featured Replies

Have had my RS for a couple of weeks now (2nd hand 14k miles) and am hoping this is normal...

On hard acceleration, the car "judders" very hard on the front wheels. Turning off ASR it does the same, but to a lesser extent.

Having only owned a Saxo VTR before, I'm not sure if this is expected behaviour. The VTR would just wheelspin in the same situation.

Any ideas?

I had a VTR and VTS and mine didn't judder either. I think the Skud has a limited slip diff unlike the Saxo and this is causing the judder as the wheels are fighting to grip the road. The limited slip diff stops the power going to the wheel thats spinning until it grips the road again. In the Saxo, the wheels would just spin freely.

Mine does it as well and mine is only 450miles old so I'm sure that there's nothing to be worried about.

Ok thanks, just as long as I've got an explanation for any passengers!

And piece of mind for me of course :)

Mine judders to, especially in the wet when driving hard. mine even does it when moving on wet roads, 1st gear already moving floor the accelerator and instant judder/wheelspin.

Mine does the same when I really floor the accelerator - the traction control light on the dash starts flashing. Isn't it just the traction control cutting in and out in response to the throttle input and feedback from the grip on the road surface? A bit less welly gives a faster take-off I've found as the acceleration is smooth and progressive as you aren't pumping out loads of torque. :)

I've not had it yet but there again I have a 4x4 with ABS, EDL and ESP. And I don't have anything to prove at my age!

According to my missus neither do I Denis - it must be the big orthapedic shoe I wear. :)

Well mine doesn't have esr or anything fancy.. other than EDL. Judders like the front of the car is going to come off if I floor it on a damp surface in 1st.

I think Lem has hit the nail on the head there.... sounds like the EDL transfering power across. Welcome to the board!

(..and I had a Saxo VTR once too, fun little car)

Back in the good old days when I had a Jaguar 3.4 Mk 1 (and there was no 70mph speed limit), flooring the throttle on a damp road would snap the back end sideways very sharpish - so I didn't. Come to think of it my Elan S2 did the same.

Are you really criticising your car for taking corrective action when you apply too much throttle for the road conditions? Try a more sensitive approach to the throttle like RikvRS and the results should be far more impressive - and kinder to the car as well.

I find I get the traction control kicking in fairly regularly - the joys of performing hill starts on wet cobbled streets covered in leaves.......(I can see the light on Ian's ambulance getting excited already.... ...)

lol...

wheelspin is possible with the 4x4, you just have to have zero grip under all wheels...

..did it once, stopped at traffic lights where there had been an obvious oil spill, disabled ESP and gave it plenty of revs, interesting to have all four wheels spinning and the car drifting sideways (just sideways, not ahead at all) till the temperature rose and it dug in taking me forward, lots of fun.

(hooligan, me, umm, maybe)

Lucky, this does not show the true aerodynamics of your (V)RS, Fortunatley I have, like the very few other WRC's, ESP

:driving:

Mr Lucky

I think the reason you aren't going anywhere is that the caravan is still on its steadies. Its probably chocked too with the parking brake on.
