Aircon regas needed

Featured Replies

What are the typical signs of needing a regas. In my case, the aircon is cool after but only after ten mins or so, unlike my previous car where it was a few secs. Would it get cold at all if it needed a regas or is it a possible sign of something else with the unit?

Cheers

Adam

You should have cool air straight away. Sounds like it needs filled up.

When they regas the Air Con they Vacuum out all whats left in, hold at that Vacuum for 20 minutes, check if any air has leaked in, all OK, regas and deodorise

If a leak is suspected a dye is added to find the leak

Hope that helps.

If it's never been done before it may just need regassing

Thanks defo sounds like its worth a try before looking elsewhere. Not aware its been redone before.

Go to kwik fit sure they do a deal if they cant do it you pay no money.

If they find a leak they will not refill it until the leak is repaired.

Several friends have been down this route, more-or-less evenly split between re-gas and a nasty repair quote.

I had an issue when the air wasn't cool but got better after 10-15 mins.

Took it to Skoda for an AC service (basically re gasseing and checking seals etc) but it still wasn't cool and I had no leaks.

Turned out to be the A/C Compressor and that wasn't cheap - £500 at a Skoda Dealer (luckily I had warranty)

Before getting it re gassed, ask them to check the system first, if it turns out to be the compressor you've wasted the money on an a/c service.

Hope it's nothing bad mate.

JKM will have their aircon guys at the rolling road meet on the 26th May at Portsmouth ....if that's a help

Anyone know how much a refill from empty is? I had to change the air-con rad on mine so its completely drained.

Suppose I should start using the AC to check it this summer. Problem I have is that im too much of an mpg whore!

You should really use the air con for at least 10 mins once a month if you have a manual system as the refigerant also contains a lubricant which helps the seals and bearings in the air con system. Without that lube you would lose the effectiveness of the seals and lose the gas.

Cheers :)

It'll get a bit of action throughout the summer months, I do a lot of mileage, and spend a lot of time in the car. That + warm temperatures + black pants = not so nice situation...

All the old refridgerant is sucked out and replaced during a regas so the amount put in is always what the manufacturer specifies.

I have used Kwik fit several times. The machines are fully automated so a spanner monkey can't get it wrong.

In systems now the compressor is always running, no clutch.

Cheers for the replies lads.

As per my earlier post, unless the "spanner monkeys" are under instruction to underfill, with the intention of convincing the customer something more sinister is wrong.

The machine is fully automated. They put in the make and model and the machine knows how much to put in. this is shown on be the printout so I don't see how they can be under any instructions.

I watched Wheeler dealers yesterday and they had a mobile guy in to do the regas, cost them £80

As always it's better to check everything else first, if there is a problem you'll have to regas again!
