Guaranteed vs Protected NCB

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I'm with Admiral, and they will probably be the cheapest when I renew this year (either them or Elephant/Bell). They offer a either a guaranteed NCB option, or a protected NCB option.

I believe the difference is that a guaranteed NCB option will let you make a claim for that year, and you will not lose your NCB, but you will not add anything either. A protected no claims bonus allows you to make 2 claims in a 3 year period.

When renewal comes, I'm thinking of doing the guaranteed NCB because I doubt I'll be with the same insurer for 3 years.

Does anyone know how much I can expect to add to the premium from choosing guaranteed NCB?

I wish I had done it last time as with my age, I lost my 2 years NCB and it added £600 to my premium sad.gif

P.S With a guaranteed NCB, is it just one claim you can make for that year, or can you make more?

My understanding is that 'Protected' allows you to make a set number of claims in a specific period, eg 3 in 5 years. Can't remember the specific numbers though. Garuanteed I believe, garuantees you retain your NCB no matter how many accidents you have, not the one year you mention.

Best to check with the insurers. I assume that even after a claim, if you had protected you can then renew with a different insurer.

Bear in mind though that it's only the disount that is protected. If you make a claim, your premium will still go up.

Hence when I was with morethan I made loads of claims due to them guaranteeing not to raise your renewal if you made a claim, that and a protected ncb

Bear in mind though that it's only the disount that is protected. If you make a claim, your premium may still go up.

EFA ;)

Thanks for the info :)

Unfortunately this year, I didn't have a NCB to worry about :(
