Gearbox oil change

Featured Replies

Im

Looking to do a gearbox oil change as my vrs has just hit 108k is this a hard job to do from anyones experience as a guy from skoda listers cov said oll do more harm than good please help ?

Not difficult really, first run the car so the gearbox is hot, raise the car so it's level, remove the undertray, remove both plugs to drain the oil, refit the drain plugs to the correct torque, fill to the level of the filler plug. You need a special splined security tool for the drain plugs that you can buy on ebay and amazon.

With regards to oil you have several choices (I assume you have a vRS?) Most experts on this forum would say use OEM oil only, especially if you want good performance across all temperatures, winter and summer etc. Skoda and VW dealers would say you need G052157A2. This however is super expensive, about £25 per litre! The original Skoda OA8 gearbox manual says the required oil is G060726A2 which is somewhat cheaper. Other forum users have had success with Fuchs Titan Sintofuild 75W80 synthetic, this is the cheapest option.

My mate owns a renault garage would he have the splinted tool or is it a skoda specialist tool and is it as simple an say an oil change thanks for the help

remove the filler plug FIRST just in case :-)

Anybody removed the gearbox oil through the filler plug using a Pela style extraction pump?

Fully Synthetic vs Mineral if my memory serves me right. One choice would be very foolish in the six speed box.

Sorry so what oil am i buying lol ?

I bought that special splined tool ready to do the oil change on my gearbox a few months back and when I came to drain/refill it didn't use those sump plugs but instead it used a hex head plug instead.

AFAIK both oils are synthetic. G060726A2 is what Skoda originally put in the 6-speed box on the VRS. For some reason Skoda now say that you need G052157A2 which is twice the price! G060726A2 is still available so that's what I would put in mine. If you want a cheaper option then maybe try the Fuchs 75W80.

Has been used by a few members on here.

And it is a very high quality oil

Just as a warning, I did a gearbox oil change in my vRS and used good quality gearbox oil and it ruined the gearchange, made first almost impossible in cold... I ended up draining and putting the correct stuff from Skoda in.

They do look different, Skoda's stuff looks like sugar water.. never had a problem since.

Thanks,

Phil.

G060726A2 - This oil is standard performance specified for a 5 speed box (£6.90 + VAT)

G052157A2 - This oil is high performance and specifically for the 6 speed box (£23 + VAT)

(Thats what a dealer just told me)

Any comments on this? Guessing no issue so long as most of the oil is extracted. 2ltrs?

What is the point though?

Drain plug is easy enough to get to?

If theres any metal in the fluid the pump wont get all of it whereas dropping the oil is a far better idea!

Pela pumps are not suitable for oil changes, gearbox or otherwise, the crap you see on a sump when a Pela has been used is unreal. It has a drain plug for a reason, use it.

Sorry to bring this thread back but is this accurate? I just brought the cheaper oil from Skoda because they couldn't tell me the difference other than the price.  I'm now concern I might have brought the wrong one as my is 6 speed.

I will buy this instead (Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80) if G052157A2 is the default factory one for my car.

Mine had 75w90 in it when I bought it, gearchange was awful when cold.

Imo any decent brand 75w80 gearbox oil will be fine :)

I got the expensive stuff from skoda a few months ago and when cold it's a nightmare I changed it because I thought it was notchy is now twice as bad so I'm going to either get the old stuff or look for an alternative

the stuff I got cost 28quid per litre and I needed 3 and it's crap
