Gearbox problems- Big problems now- Big bill

Hey folks.

Anyone got any recomendations for any gearbox specialists in/around York/Yorkshire?

Got a little problem with our gearbox which started with it jumping out of 6th gear on the motorway at about 120mph. It went back into gear fine and was ok until I stopped a while after for a break and I couldn't engage any of the gears. A couple drops of the clutch and retries and it was ok.

Now that we're back home 1st gear is pretty stiff to engage and second gear is cruntching. I fear this may be the selector shaft/forks that are jiggered and so want a specialist to have a look and then if it needs stripping down then they can do the work.

So any recomendations?

Thanks

Phil

Yeh... I never said I was doing that speed in the UK.

I was on an unrestricted section of the Autobahn with clear traffic and conditions at the time... All perfectly legal and safe...

If its the same sort of setup as an octy I'm wondering if resetting the linkage might help?

There's a few guides on youtube

Worth a try as its free

How unusual, someone talking rubbish without knowing the full situation first on briskoda. . . .

Back OT, iv got a very good bloke down here in Buckinghamshire but its a fair old distance from you I'm afraid. :(

Lol... Yeh. Guess it's easy to make assumptions and jump to conclusions but common sense surely has to prevail... I mean would I really openly talk about doing 120mph If I had done that speed in the UK on a public road?!

And yes... little too far unfortunately!

I've already tried that... I can do it to the best of my ability but my problem is that the little locking pin on the side of the box has snapped off (that was the last time I did the adjustment). So basically I have to just best guess where the lever is positioned then a little trial and error so not sure.

It seems better after doing it but it does still crunch now and then but then sometimes seems really smooth.

Bloody cars...

Reading the post in isolation, as I did, gives no clear/definite indication that the problem originated abroad, in this case Germany. Returning home could relate to travel within the UK. It was applied as a jokey/light hearted comment & although I couldn't advise Philje123, I in effect wished him all the best in resolving. Perhaps then in light of this your comment may be considered just a little disproportionate. Chill B)

Does the clutch feel ok? Mine did similar when I first got it but it was due to me resting my foot on clutch pedal, stopped doing it after I realised lol

Wonder if its something to do with the hydraulics?

No change in the feel of the clutch.

I definitely dont ride the clutch. take my foot completely off it when I change gear.

Really not sure what it is.

I'll see how it goes in the meantime. I have also just topped the fluid up as it had got quite low due to a leak from the aformentioned snapped locking pin.

Pumping the pedal bit in your first post does make it sound more like a clutch hydraulic problem. Hired a transit a few weeks back that had the same problem of crunching and being difficult to engage gear, it suddenly started to work fine after some pumping.

There was a thread in the Octi II section a while ago about clutch/gearbox issue and the guy took it to a clutch/gearbox specialist around Leeds somewhere, it turned out to be something quite simple and cheap to repair. I'll have a dig around and see if I can find the thread

Thanks for the info.

Seems like a slightly different issue to what I'm experiencing but could be the same cause.

Might give them a ring and see what they think. I't definitely not right.

An update on the symptoms as I've noticed something else:

1st gear very stiff to engage - comes out of first no problem

2nd gear crunching - seems better if I wait a second with the clutch pressed before getting second. Also seems better if I let it rev a bit more in first

3rd gear a little notchy to engage - 4th, 5th and 6th are silky smooth

1st & 2nd gear has a whine only heard when in gear at low speed when you come off the throttle and slow down - This could actually be consistent with a bearing issue

Also I noticed the other day when trying to adjust the gear linkage that the lever that the linkage moves is quite wobbly and loose.

The car has done approx. 103,000 miles btw. Think it is the original clutch etc as don't have any paperwork etc relating to that.

Will give that place a ring and see what they think with just the description of the problems.

Well I thought it had cured itself as the gearbox went silky smooth the other day but then after it had been driven a bit it went stiff again. I have had it loosen off by pumping the clutch a few times but that doesn't always work.

I will grab some brake fluid today and give it a bleed tonight to try and rule that one out as it's the cheapest thing to check first.

If not then it's off to the garage as it's either a dodgy clutch or something inside the box.

If a clutch was on it's way out would it slip? Never has it slipped not once even when the tuning box was on.

imo it points to the clutch hydraulic system, doesn't sound like the clutch itself is at fault or the gearbox. Could be one of the seals. I know a really good mechanic who won't rip you off and won't charge the earth, do you want his number?

Yeh. Will give it a good bleed tonight once I've picked up some fluid and will give the pedal a good pump too which should help dislodge any air trapped.

Is there just the one bleed point for the clutch anyone know?

And yes. I will have his number please Raf. Whereabouts is he based?

Well bleeding the clutch hasn't worked.

A bit of air did come out actually but its still doing it.

I spent a few mins on the drive with it running and if I engage 1st then let the clutch bite its then very hard to pull out of gear with clutch down.

Without the engine running it goes in and out of all gears fine.

Think the finger still points to the clutch. Perhaps the clutch slave cylinder?

VAGE uk are good at fixing gear boxe's, there not the cheapest but any work they do is covered all over europe with break down recover (at least they did). The norm was to exchange gear boxes but you can get your own sent of fixed and returned in a special box. Find a local partco/unipart they were agents for them.

That's my guess though it could also be the fluid mine sometimes does this in heavy traffic but is very rare so can't be bothered to check it out properly lol

Dropped it off at the garage this morning then got the folding bike out the boot and cycled to the office (only in the centre so not far at all).

Will see what he says in a bit! *scared*
