Waiting for Eurocar parts to get back to me with more info as I might need to change mine at some point in the near future.

Well that was easy.. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/223127-octavia-mkii-gearboxclutch/page__view__findpost__p__2642637 West Yorkshire Transmissions in Bradford

  • TBH I'd probably look at getting the box rebuilt and a bit of a discount from the dealer. You've no idea how a second hand box would be without taking it apart anyway.

Is that box an early Fabia one (long) or a newer (short) one.

Really don't want a newer one as the gearing in 6th is not great.

Also would ideally not want an SMF conversion and just go with a replacement DMF.

Thanks

Phil

Yeh I know that's whats worrying me.

What you mean in regards a discount from the dealer? The car is at an independant garage.

Phil

Actually that one will be the short one as it says it came off a BLT engine car.

Early ones will be more difficult to find as they stopped doing them after about a 18 months on the Ibiza, and about 8 months on the Fabia.

If mine ever goes, I'm going with an SMF conversion. Not the chattery ones like people run with big power though... The Valeo one is heavier and designed not to chatter.

Ah right.

Might see about getting the box rebuilt but save a bit of money on clutch/flywheel.

Does anyone know if the LUK and Sachs clutch and flywheel are interchangable?

The guy said they would replace with whatever is currently on the car but it seems the Sachs are cheaper. Are they as good as LUK and useable on mine?

phil

IIRC sachs are better and if you're doing the DMF and clutch it's what I'd go with.

It might not be true any more, but if it's cheaper....

I guess what I was asking was could you get the guy to give you say 10% off, on the basis that they'll be buying the parts with a big discount compared to their given prices.

They're not no.

If you have a LUK flywheel, then you need a LUK clutch and vice versa, but if you're replacing the whole lot, obviously doesn't matter really which set you buy.

Apparently the individual bits different thickness on LUK vs Sachs, but make up the same overall dimensions when flywheel, clutch and cover are bolted together if you see what I mean.

  • Author

Ah right yeh I see what you mean.

I will probably see if I could get the parts ordered myself from euro car parts and get them delivered directly to them and save some money that way. Will check what they were going to charge me for the bits first.

Btw. The price he gave for the rebuild with a company in Huddersfield was £480+ vat... sound about right?

Phil

Is that inclusive of the initial diagnostics?

  • Author

Is that inclusive of the initial diagnostics?

Yes. Basically he said they would collect the gearbox once they have removed it from the car and diagnose the problem and worst case scenario for a rebuild then would be that price.

Phil

Doesn't sound too unreasonable then.

Might be worth giving a few others a ring with symptoms over the phone just for ballpark figures?

  • Author

Yeh might do that.

He said he had rung a few and they seemed the best/most reasonable.

I'm pretty confident they have the diagnosis right as I have read some stuff about the gearbox whine I had and it appears to be the bearings in the box and now it seems they have completely gone.

Gah... I hate cars right now!

Phil

Ouch, commiserations.

I had similar trouble with an ibiza but everything was cheaper as it was 6 years ago and only a 1.4 petrol to boot. I think it cost about £350 to strip, fit new bearings and refit to car then although warranty direct paid most of it.

Sorry to hear of your news. not what you were wanting to hear.

Re. rebuild prices, I paid around the same for a gearbox rebuild on a Rover 214 about 10years ago so that seems to be a reasonable price to think its 10years later & a 6speed not a 5speed box.

Thats one other thing my dad said about Roger Holmes, they weren't pushy and when they diagnosed the compressor fault on my parents octavia he wasn't pushy with getting it booked in.

Get a lsd aswell lol

Id check u pull it and motor hog and see if they have owt in aswell though

Just been thinking more about the SMF conversion.

Hadn't realised that it comes with clutch too.

Would a slave cylinder also be required?

Anything else to consider?

What would the driveability be like?

Phil

You won't need slave cyl.

I had mine converted to SMF at 35K under warranty as SUK told the dealer to fit it all. Transforms the car after. So quiet, smooth and no more chatter and vibrations with bad juddering. I find the car more responsive now. You won't be disappointed.

Good luck with sorting it out.

You'll need to replace the concentric slave cylinder.

  • Author

Thanks for that.

Think I will go for it as it works out slightly cheaper anyway.

Heard good things about SMF conversions anyway and I'm sure we won't be disappointed.

So definitely they're ok as a daily driver round town etc?

Phil

  • Author

Ah. Thought that would be the case.

Might just get the garage to supply that as its showing out of stock anyway.

I will just supply the SMF and clutch kit and get them to sort rest out.

Phil

Best of luck!

  • Author

Just going to stick with DMF actually now.

The garage have advised against the SMF as they have had a lot of problems with them when they've fitted them and although he said he's more than happy to fit for me it's not what he would recommend.

To be fair the DMF has actually been fine and it has lasted 105k miles which isn't bad.

He is also adamant that the clutch and flywheel has to be replaced like for like. So if it's LUK then LUK has to go back on and if it's Sachs then Sachs has to go back on.

Going to get the box off and sent to the transmission specialist and see what the problem is but he's pretty sure it's the bearings that have gone.

Phil

How are you getting on with this Phil?

  • Author

Hey.

Not heard anything actually.

The last I spoke to the garage was on Tuesday when I gave him the go ahead to get the box off and sent to the specialist.

Was going to ring later today to get an update as I need to get the clutch and flywheel ordered too.

Really want the car back though but know it will be a while longer as god knows how long it will take to repair the box etc.

Phil
