I don't know how much the garage is able to get a replacement turbo for, i'll ask them tomorrow.

Turbo dynamics do a new garret one for 560

How much would an exchange one from turbo technics be?

Ok, decided.

If it can be fixed for under £1000 then I'm getting it fixed. If not then I'll part-ex the car for something newer, that is if I am offered at least £1750 for my car. As it is, the car still drives well, albeit with a slightly whistly turbo

If you decide to fix it yourself, get a quote for the part from these people

Steve

I think this is who the garage use for their parts, as I've seen their vans around their place.

TPS are a given.

Car appears to have a Borg Warner turbo. The garage said that the part form their supplier was £650+VAT. I bought one myself from Turbo Dynamics for £430+VAT. Its arriving tomorrow and will be fitted this week.

According to TD the Garret one would require an ECU change.

After it is removed, is the turbo (one that's on its way out) and manifold worth anything to anyone?

Its fixed!

Turbo £520 from Turbo Dynamics (garage siad that they'll get all their turbos from there now!)

Fitting, oil change, oil feed pipe £400

£920 total inc. VAT

I need to drive it gently over the next two weeks

I looked at the old turbo, a small chunk of a vane had come off (which would explain the noise) and it went out of the exhaust, which would explain the car's recovery and the resulting increased turbo noise and the slight lack of power. I assume that a vane with a chunk missing would cause an imbalance in the turbine and it would eventually have failed further.

I've got the old turbo and pipe work in the boot of the car. Is this worth anything to anyone? If not then I'll dismantle it, just out of interest.

Glad to have it back

Fingers crossed for now more expensive fixes over the next 60,000 miles.

Congrats on getting a fix!

Always good to hear that someone averted disaster.

So the exhaust vanes broke, not the turbine end itself? Pretty lucky. If it had been the other way... You'd possibly be looking at a new engine.

The mechanic said they they've recently had two TDIs in that had their engines written off by exploded turbos.

I took the old turbo home. I'll try and get a picture of the damage.

Do I smash it up in a fit of rage for emptying my bank account!

I'd probably be patting it for blowing up the 'right' way, if there is such a thing! It would have set you back a LOT more if it had been the other way round!

Strip it down and refurb it your self for something to do ???
