What oil should i use

Featured Replies

I looked at oils and i found 5w 30 but my local car parts said i shud use 5w 40 help please

The 1.9 PD TDI lump can be quite fussy about oil I've read. You should use oil which meets VW 505 01. I believe VW 506.01 specification or the VW 507.00 can be substituted. Google those codes and you should find oils which match those specs, quite a few manufacturers make them.

Found a list of 505 01 oils here, no idea if it's exhaustive or not

I wouldn't go shoving in any old 5w40 diesel synthetic in and definitely not the 5w30, you have to remember that PD engines work under some seriously high pressure and temperatures, and have long servicing intervals. If you change the oil more frequently you can probably get away with lesser spec oil but I'd still stick to a decent 5w40. If you're just buying this oil for a small top up rather than a full oil change, I wouldn't worry so much.

If you have a look in 'The Extremely Useful Fabia 1 Topic' that's a sticky at the top of the forum the last link is the one i've posted, it also has a few other useful links for future reference :)

When choosing you oil just make sure you understand the difference between "VW 505.01 approved" and "meets the requirements of VW 505.01". They can mean two very different things!

Just pop into a VAG garage and pick up some PD spec Quantum. Platinum is it now for the 505.10? Probably going to be cheaper than other brands, and you'll know it's bang on for the car. You can put 507.00 oil in, which is Longlife I think, so higher spec than 505.01, but I don't see much point myself if you're not on variable servicing, which you can't with a Fabia vRS anyway.

Ashby - Round Towers on Croft road have VW 505.01 ,and the price is not bad . Otherwise , Listers VW at the Elliot has 505.01 bt dearer, but proper VW oil).

The engine oil search tool on certain sites where you enter your reg number indicates that 5w 30 is the correct oil to use for the Fabia vRS TDI? Here on Briskoda 5w 40 seems to be the recommended oil and as mentioned above 5w 30 should not be used, but OK for a top up?

Sorry just a little confused :)

I purchase Valvoline Engine Oil (Durablend Diesel Semi-Synthetic 5W40 5 Litre). Eurocar parts sell it for around £40 but they always have discount codes etc. Just remember that the PD engine takes around 4.3-4.5 ltrs. I say this as some brands only sell their oil in 4ltr bottles. Very crafty.

Ignore the viscosity, it's largely irrelevant in this application, focus on it being certified to the correct standard as stated in the link I posted. If it's certified to 505.01 or 507.00 it'll be suitable, if it doesn't it won't. If you have any doubts buy Quantum as it's VW's own brand and supplied via TPS or your local dealer.
