Rattle in boot area!

Featured Replies

All,

I have an extremely irritating rattle in the boot - vRS estate.

It sounds like something is loose and the sound has got progressively worse over the last week or so.

Have checked everything is secure under the boot floor, nothing rattling in the side pockets, checked the back seats are properly secure and even removed my child seats to eliminate them as a cause.

I've read on here that the tailgate can 'chatter' if the latch gets loose, but everything seems secure.

Driving me MAD - never listened to so much loud music before as have had several long journeys recently.

Car in for its second service tomorrow so will be asking them to have a look - it's under warranty.

Any thoughts / suggestions as to where I should be asking them to look!

Thanks guys!

Anyone able to help out / suggest a possible cause - at stealers first thing!

Cheers.

Had similar in my hatchback and eventually traced it to the high level brake light plastic housing. Some others have resorted to taping around the edge but mine is cured (temporarily) by running a firm finger around the housing which seems to stick it back on the glass.

Mine had the same. I spoke to my dealer who did something at the last service and it hadn't appeared again until this morning, so i guess it must be heat related. Mine is definitely a plastic sound, so i am going to have a look at the high level rear brake light.

Rear seat bolster (the parts that stays up with the seats are down between the seat and the door)? Try punching it to see if you can recreate the rattle - i did this when trying to find the source of my boot rattle.

Check your boot trim i had two trim clips floating about in there when i first bout my vrs :-)

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Picked it up from the dealer tonight and he said that they had traced the rattle to the rear parcel shelf. Apparently they went for a drive with a 'technician' in the boot. They have put silicone lube on it.

On the way home (about 5 miles) it was initially better, but then quickly returned to the previous noise levels - to the point that I'm now not sure if it's the parcel shelf at all.

I will re-lube it when I get a chance, and also take the shelf out completely to see if the rattle remains......

If it is the shelf and it can't be cured, I'll ask for a new one under warranty.

I'll keep you posted!

Cheers,

Dunc

I've been away for several weeks and what do I find on return - a posting about rattle in boot area! dunc69 you have my sympathies. My first rattle started after the car was 2 months old. The wife sat in back of car and said definitely it's the parcel shelf. Problem solved I thought - chuck out parcel shelf. No, damn rattle still there so not parcel shelf. Could be the high rear breaklight which is a piece of crap plastic and sounds tinny when lightly tapped. Took it to dealer and demonstrated noise by getting tech guy to tap break - no sir they all do that (std answer to all queries). Trouble is the rattle is not present all the time and never when left with dealer.

Basically it could be one or more of a dozen things: see http://jettagolf.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/eliminate-rattle-under-rear-roof-lining.html

Pls keep us informed of any progress in your quest.
