brake pads

Featured Replies

I need to change the discs on my 2002 superb saloon .Can anyone advise me the best ones to get I have seen BREMBO and EICHER advertised on ebay at a reasonable price

Best are stock discs or reputable alternatives, e.g. Febi and TRW. Slotted/drilled/patterned discs mostly eat the pads up much quicker, rather than offering much increase in performance, plus if they crack you are in a whole new world of trouble.

It is the pads that you want to upgrade, I have used EBC yellow kevlar pads for many years and they offer improved stopping power (about 20%-30% over stock pads) and no brake fade. And since my application/test is repeated 120mph+ down to ~55mph braking on autobahn trips in Europe, I'd say I have tested them. Most kevlar pads will give similar results.

If you upgrade pads make sure your brake fluid is also up for increased caliper temperature, use Castrol React Super DOT 4 fluid for increased boiling point, or at the very least good quality DOT4 fluid. I did boil factory fill fluid (at 1yr old) on one occasion, with kevlar pads on. Stock pads fade before stock fluid boils. Refilled with Castrol Super Dot 4 and never had the problem since. Note DOT5.1 fluids are compatible too, but the less viscous ones can result in clutch pedal squeak (actually seals on cylinders do the squeaking).

I use EBC Ultimax with Green Stuff pads. Lasts a life time... :-)
