Boost gauge

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, after recently buying a vrs, i decided to fit a boost gauge as it felt a bit pokey for standard.

Anyway, i've got it all fitted thanks to the guide on here and it's holding 1.5 bar and over boosting way over 2 according to the racetech dial that i installed, so i'm guessing it's been re mapped ? Also i have an annoying problem with the needle vibrating about and making a noise, so do i need a restrictor in the pipe, if so what do you use ?

The needle vibrating and the noise, does it sound like its hissing?

When my mates did this, the pipe on the rear was leaking.

No, it's definitley not hissing ?

It's the needle making the vibrating noise by the way.

mine runs 32 psi or 2.2 bar but i have the mods to support this.. on a standard set up i think this could be too much,

Standard is 1.3bar roughly. My hybrid over boosts to about 1.6 then returns to 1.3 when on standard mapping. Spiking a standard turbo to over 2 bar won't do it much good! Oh and try a slim cigarette filter in the boost line or get a little airline restrictive from a fish shop - same as what they use for fish tank air pumps.

As above, the bouncing needle is sorted by either a ciggy filter or some cleverly placed cable ties.

Only other way is to get an electrical boost gauge rather than the mechanical one you have.

Thanks for the replies, i took it to my local re mapping place to find out wether or not it's been done or not and it turns out that he actually did it last year for the previous owner ! Good guess eh !

I'll try the fag filter thing and see how i get on tonight.

Yeah it jumps way over 2 bar, only very briefly though, then holds around 1.5.

if the diameter of the pipe coming from the boost nipple is too large, it can cause the needle to jump about.

It's just 3mm clear polythene pipe from b&q ?

Right, got the fag filter in and it's sorted the gauge out, no more wobbley needle and it's now reading about 1.7 bar over boost and still holding at 1.5, tapering down towards the end of the rev range.

My boost gauge is bouncing and vibrating like mad! Do I put the cigarrette filter into the tubing? Where can I get the filter from, how much are they?

Edit: mine already has a restrictor in the tubing yet the gauge still buzzzzzzzzing!!! :-(

Mine buzzed and fluttered like mad when I fitted it. Go to your car parts place and get a little in line fuel filter like this

Fit that and see how it runs and then just keep adding bits of cotton wool.or fag filter into the piping until it's smoothed the air flow and it the needle is steady. If it's a fairly cheap gauge they're not overly accurate, mine peaks at 1.4 bar according to the gauge yet I know when faboka mapped it its at 1.5 but I can judge if it's got a problem or a boost leak from it so it's good enough.

Thanks mate, I found out the previous owner had fitted a very small clamp on the tubing, I fiddled around with that, a couple of turns (to make it tighter) and the buzzing appears to have disappeared. Will give it some time and see how it goes. I assume over time the clamp had loosened up. So far it seems ok

Thanks for your help, if it starts buzzing again I'll have to adopt your idea

Cheers

Have you got a link for the brass nipple you plumb into the plastic pipe? thanks

I went into a plumbing parts place and told them what I wanted. Think it was only a few quid, I might even have it in my door card if you want it and cover the postage

halfords sell little boxes of plastic tube connectors only about a fiver for the box with all different shapes and styles and sizes. always handy to have as I have used this box for repairing my rear washer pipe. headlight washer pipe and boost guage. also I bought a length on washer pipe for plumbing my boost guage as its ALLOT cheaper than boost piping

also to stop mine buzzing I simply put a tiny cut off pieceof ear plug foam

That would be great thanks. Could you pm me a price and PayPal or something.

The coolant pipe going to your expansion tank looks like it has a nasty gash in it.
