blown turbo or just a pipe

Featured Replies

Hi all, yesterday while the engine was cold I pulled away quite sharpish as another car was bearing down on me and in second I had a loading pop and then a sudden loss of power. Car drove fine but lacked power as I kinda limped round a corner into a side street.

There was no massive black cloud only the usual puff as the car is remapped when all this happened. Now the car sounds like a police car siren but only when revved (whilst parked).

When revved there is some but not masses of black sooty smoke. When I first start the car I get the usual turbo noise and nothing seems wrong until I rev then all becomes apparent again. I've check the pipework and the are no pipes hanging off, but a couple seem slightly loose but when I gently tug on them they don't become dislodged they stay in place. Is this the turbo saying goodbye or is it a loose pipe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh and the car is an ASZ Fabia VRS with the standard KKK turbo

If all the pipes are on then I'd say it's the turbo. Never heard of those symptoms leading to another issues

Are you sure you've checked all the pipe work? 99% sure you've popped a hose off.

Ive checked both ends of the I/C and also both pipe ends on the turbo also a few others that are all part of the turbo to engine and turbo to I/C and whilst a couple have play in them none of these have popped off. Like I say when I start her up you get the usual whistle of the turbo coming to life and you would never know anything is wrong until you rev her. One thing to mention is when I turn her of you can hear a rushing wind like whitsle that dies away after say 5 seconds, but I cant fathom where it's coming from.

it won't neccessarily pop off just one "leg" letting go will allow a leak the best way is to push each joint hard if no better dismantle and check each o-ring------- the sound when turning off is the asv valve choking the flow

Ah ok, what do you mean by the phrase leg? Sorry

I'd call it a 'lug'. The hoses secure on with a few of them, just small lumps of metal on the side of the metal end of the pipe. Crap system really. If youve had them off maybe when cambelt/water pump change then they become worn.

Ok, so I need to check both pipes to the I/C and the two pipes to the turbo, are there any smaller pipes that will need checking? Am I best off just disconnecting all of these pipes and kind of re-fitting them all??

Sounds like a good idea! If you've got a little bit of time it'd be well worth checking and reassembling all the joints on the inter poker pipe work. Check for loose or missing clips on each one too :)

hey all, well I took the lower pipe on the I/C and had a rummage around to fine small pieces of metal. Blown turbo it is. Here are my finding and then a few questions.

Found small pieces of metal but not much oil, this is a good thing right (the lack of oil) i.e it wasn't swimming in the stuff.

My questions are as follows. I know to clear out the metal bits but where else should I check for metal? Obviously I don't want this stuff getting into the engine.

I'm pretty handy with a spanner so I'm going to change it myself and fit a hybrid PD130 turbo, are there any handy tips and hints you guys can throw my way.I have time on my hands as I'm borrowing the in laws spare run-around so I'm very lucky.

Any help will be gratefully received :)

Clean all the boost pipes and the intercooler out. Then check all ur boost pipes for splits in as the metal may have sliced some. Hopefully none will have gone in your engine!

Also i did my turbo on my drive. I found dropping the engine off the mount and taking the inlet off to get the turbo out, instead of taking the driveshaft out. two people makes it easyier when putting it all together again, saves you struggling!

never had to do it but there is a procedure for getting oil into the NEW turbo without starting the engine may need some research :-)

some good advice there, I have got the old turbo out now and I'm awaiting a new one. How can I tell if any bits got into the engine. The engine has sounded fine so far in fact you wouldn't know anything was wrong while idling. Cheshire you took the words right out of my mouth, I was going to ask how that was done, I will do some research and see what I find. Thanks peeps

I just poured some into the internals before i started my car. Seemed fine.

You're meant to crank it without letting it fire, usually by disconnecting the injector loom plug. At the same time doing 'something' underneath, not quite sure what the something is though as my mechanic did that while I cranked it lol

ah ok, could you tell me where the injector loom plug is please? Wonder what he did? Really can't find anything on the forum......

Good find lol, not entirely sure what he did lol. I know it was stated on my TD warranty sheet that the turbo had to be primed before starting though.

a shot in the dark here, I wonder if he had disconnected the oil return pipe at the bottom of the turbo and while you cranked it waited for a little oil to flow out the bottom so he knew the turbo had oil in it???

that sounds like a sensible move then you KNOW it's feeding oil

Change the oil feed pipe while you are there.

OK peeps. I'm going to be putting a nice new turbo back in next week, can anyone out there throw any helpful hints and do's and don't in my direction, just in case something has been forgotten. I am purchasing a braided oil feed from darkside developments which will make things much easier. Many thanks :) Oh and one last thing, will a PD130 turbo taken from a MK4 golf be a straight fit?

You may need to clock the cold side around to line the inter cooler pipe work up, i think it's just some m8/10 bolts you slacken off then rotate it.

Good luck dude :)
